Job Purpose
The Library Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting the Library Manager with daily operations. Key responsibilities include processing new materials, managing book lending, and enhancing the library's services to benefit students and staff alike.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities
- Welcome students and teachers to the library and address inquiries from library users.
- Demonstrate strong computer skills to assist students and manage administrative tasks effectively.
- Guide library users in locating materials that meet their needs and fostering proficiency in utilizing online resources.
- Perform circulation processes, including book checkouts, renewals, and returns, using the Library Management System (Access-it), and assist in cataloguing new additions to the library collection.
- Maintain an organized library environment by shelving stock and ensuring the space is tidy; be physically capable of bending low and reaching high to shelve books, as well as carrying and lifting boxes of books.
- Assist in the upkeep and maintenance of library stock, including repairs, weeding, withdrawing items, shelving, and fine-tidying.
- Contribute to the selection and promotion of new books and online resources.
- Provide administrative support for the Accelerated Reader program.
- Supervise students participating in library CAS activities and maintain records of their progress to support their D of E Service.
- Collaborate with the Library Manager to plan book fairs and library events.
- Support the Library Manager in supervising students while they are using the library.
- Participate in the school induction program for new students.
- Develop and sustain connections with other libraries and relevant organizations (SLA, ECIS, SGIS, CIS, CILIP).
- Undertake additional tasks as reasonably required by the Library Manager to ensure the library operates smoothly.
- Understand and implement all school policies and procedures, with a special emphasis on safeguarding children and young people.
- Uphold the School’s Guiding Principles and ensure the ethos of the School is maintained at all times.
