Job Purpose
The Library Assistant plays a vital role in supporting the Library Manager with daily library operations. Responsibilities include processing new materials, managing book check-outs and returns, and promoting the library's services to ensure an efficient experience for both students and staff.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities
- Welcome students and teachers to the library; respond to inquiries from library users.
- Utilize computer skills to assist students and perform various administrative tasks.
- Guide library users in locating materials that meet their needs; help users become proficient in utilizing online resources.
- Execute circulation processes, including issuing, renewing, and returning books through the Library Management System (Access-it); support the cataloguing of new materials for the library collection.
- Shelve books and maintain a tidy library environment; physically capable of bending low and reaching high for book shelving, as well as carrying and lifting boxes of books.
- Assist with the upkeep and maintenance of library stock, including repairs, weeding, withdrawing outdated materials, shelving, and fine-tuning organization.
- Contribute to the selection and marketing of new books and online resources.
- Provide administrative support for the Accelerated Reader programme.
- Supervise students participating in library CAS activities and maintain records of their progress (to support their Duke of Edinburgh Service).
- Collaborate with the Library Manager to plan book fairs and library events.
- Assist in supervising students utilizing library resources.
- Participate in the school induction program for new students.
- Develop and sustain connections with other libraries and relevant organizations (SLA, ECIS, SGIS, CIS, CILIP).
- Perform any other tasks reasonably requested by the Library Manager to facilitate the smooth operation of the library.
- Understand and adhere to all school policies and procedures, with a particular focus on safeguarding children and young people.
