Within the Vice-Presidency for Knowledge Transfer and Corporate Relations, the Research Contracts Group plays a pivotal role in supporting researchers to establish a solid legal foundation for their projects with national and international partners.
About the Role
We are currently seeking a committed, solution-oriented negotiator to join our team as Legal Counsel for ETH Zurich │ Space. In this position, you will serve as the primary legal point of contact for research activities related to ETH Zurich │ Space and ETH Swiss GeoLab.
Your Responsibilities
- Independently review, draft, and negotiate complex national and international research and development contracts, including Research Collaboration Agreements, Consortium Agreements, and Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs).
- Manage projects with international space agencies, research institutions, and industry partners, particularly in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA), NASA, and other global stakeholders.
- Advise researchers on legal issues relating to international research collaborations, intellectual property, and liability matters.
- Support compliance matters related to export controls and dual-use goods.
- Provide proactive guidance to researchers throughout the project lifecycle, from initiation to successful completion.
- Further develop contract templates, guidelines, and standard processes for effective management of space and research projects.
- Collaborate with ETH transfer, compliance units, and other stakeholders to ensure legally sound international research collaborations.
Who You Are
We are looking for someone with a strong ability to analyze complex issues and a passion for facilitating research in a world-class environment:
- Education: University degree in law or equivalent legal qualification, with a solid technical understanding.
- Experience: At least 5 years of relevant experience in international contract law or research management, ideally within an international organization, tech/space sector, or academic institution.
- Expertise: In-depth knowledge of Swiss and international contract law; familiarity with intellectual property law, technology transfer, or research law is a plus.
- Space Law: Knowledge of international space law and regulatory issues will be advantageous.
- Export Control & Regulation: Experience with export control law and dual-use goods is highly valued, plus knowledge of ESA or NASA regulatory frameworks.
- Skills: Strong analytical, negotiation, and risk assessment skills; ability to address legal risks pragmatically.
- Languages: Fluency in German and English (both spoken and written); business-level English is essential.
- Mindset & Working Style: Service-oriented, pragmatic, and an effective communicator with confidence in dealing with researchers and industry representatives.
