Your Responsibilities

This position presents a strategic opportunity to develop interdisciplinary courses that blend expertise in global visual cultures—both historical and contemporary—with computational analytical methods and critical approaches to digital tools and artifacts.

The ideal candidate will possess a doctoral degree in fields such as Art History, Visual Culture, Media Studies, Archaeology, Film Studies, Education, Digital Humanities, Digital Culture Studies, or a closely related discipline, focusing on the computational analysis of visual materials. Specialization in digital curation and analysis of visual cultural data, including but not limited to artworks, photographs, maps, films and videos, digital media (such as memes and Instagram posts), objects, artifacts, exhibition records, and visual archives is essential. The candidate should be well-versed in computational methods like computer vision, machine learning, network analysis, data management, and digital preservation, while also engaging with critical perspectives that encompass tool and data criticism as well as digital ethics. Furthermore, demonstrated experience in teaching computational methods within the context of visual culture studies is required.

Collaboration will extend across various institutions and cultural areas (including Art History, East Asian Art History, Film Studies, Archaeology, Media and Communication, and Educational Sciences) to ensure relevance in a rapidly evolving academic and technological landscape.

Teaching Responsibilities

  • Teaching responsibilities amounting to 8 weekly teaching units (each 45 minutes), generally comprising four courses each semester at the BA, MA, and/or PhD levels in programs such as Film Studies, Art History, Archaeology, Media and Communication, and Educational Sciences.
  • Administering examinations and student performance assessments.
  • Participating in student information events and preparing informational materials for students.

Didactic and Institutional Responsibilities

  • Engaging in university-level pedagogical training.
  • Providing cross-institutional training for instructors teaching relevant modules, including covering technical fundamentals and adapting the latest tools and techniques.

Research

  • Demonstrating active research in the field of Digital Humanities with a focus on visual cultural data.
  • Contributing to scholarly publications.
  • Networking and collaborating with research partners within and beyond the involved departments.
  • Participating in conferences and presenting original research findings.

Your Profile

Required Qualifications:

  • A PhD in Art History, Visual Culture, Media Studies, Archaeology, Film Studies, Education, Digital Humanities, Digital Visual Culture Studies, or a closely related field with a focus on the computational analysis of visual cultural materials. Candidates must demonstrate documented experience in the computational analysis of visual materials and teaching computational methods within visual culture studies.
  • Proficiency in computational methods such as:
    • Digital curation and data management of visual cultural data
    • Computer vision and image analysis
    • Machine learning applications for cultural visual data
    • Mapping visual data and network analysis
    • Critical approaches, including critical data studies, tool criticism, and digital ethics.
  • Demonstrated experience in university-level teaching in computational methods for the study of visual cultural data at both the undergraduate and graduate levels (experience at the PhD level is advantageous). This includes course development and delivery, as well as supervision of student projects.
  • Fluency in English for teaching and supervision (knowledge of German is advantageous but not a requirement).
