Lead Mechatronics Engineer / Lead Mechatronics Engineeress

ETH Zürich - February 23, 2026

Join the Laboratory of Molecular Medicine

Led by Prof. Yohei Yamauchi, the Laboratory of Molecular Medicine is excited to announce a transformative phase in the development of the ViViD-AFM V2.0—a next-generation nano-imaging system. This project aims to bridge the gap between academic prototypes and commercial-grade industrial systems while ensuring complete IP independence from legacy V1.0 patents.

Position Overview

We are in search of a visionary Lead Mechatronics Engineer to spearhead the design and development of the V2.0 system in collaboration with the Lead Architect. This critical Hire will focus on the physical realization of a high-speed AFM system tailored for biological research.

Key Responsibilities

  • Hardware Realization: Translate architectural requirements into functional ViViD-AFM V2.0 mechatronic hardware.
  • Precision Engineering: Design and implement sub-nanometer control systems and high-precision scanning devices.
  • Specialized Mechatronics: Proven history in the realization of high-speed AFM hardware targeted at soft cell surfaces.
  • Control Systems: Expert-level knowledge of sub-nanometer control systems, surpassing generic mechatronics.
  • Collaborative Design: Ability to work closely with architects to solve complex system integration challenges.
  • Academic/Industrial Background: Experience with high-precision scanning mechanisms and transitioning research to industry.
  • Technical Synchronization: Collaborate with the Lead Architect to ensure seamless integration of hardware, software, and architecture.
  • Prototyping: Oversee the transition from initial hardware components to a fully integrated commercial-grade device.

A Unique Opportunity

This position represents a unique bridge between high-level academic research at ETH Zurich and the dynamic environment of a high-tech startup. You will have the chance to lead the architectural development of a system poised to redefine nano-imaging. We foster a collaborative atmosphere and will support your transition into the spin-off phase. ETH Zurich also offers assistance with permit processes (e.g., B-Permit sponsorship) for international candidates.
