Laboratory Technician Position at the RNA Biology and Disease Laboratory

The RNA Biology and Disease laboratory at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biophysics, ETH Zurich, is seeking a dedicated laboratory technician to support its daily research activities and overall laboratory operations.

About the Research Laboratory

This lab focuses on mammalian gene regulation and RNA processing pathways, employing a range of structural, biochemical, and cellular assays. These include:

  • Cryo-electron and light microscopy
  • Gene editing
  • Next-generation sequencing
  • Proteomics
  • Reconstitution of large protein-RNA complexes from recombinant proteins

Through these methodologies, the laboratory aims to uncover the molecular basis of disease mechanisms to identify novel therapeutic targets.

Your Role

We are looking for an open-minded and flexible team member who will actively contribute to our diverse research projects. In this role, you will:

  • Assist fellow lab members with their projects and adapt to participatory needs
  • Conduct experiments including cloning constructs, protein expression, and purification from bacterial and insect cells
  • Cultivate mammalian tissue culture cell lines, generate stable cell lines, and analyze expression patterns through techniques such as immunofluorescence, western blotting, and RT-qPCR
  • Diligently document lab work and maintain internal databases
  • Independently organize and coordinate repairs and maintenance of laboratory equipment

Job Details

The position is available starting June 1, 2026, or by mutual agreement, and is initially limited to one year, with the potential for extension based on funding availability.

Candidate Profile

  • Completed apprenticeship as a laboratory technician or hold a Master’s degree in biochemistry, biology, or a related field
  • Experience with molecular biology, cell biology, and biochemical methods, preferably including RNA handling
  • Independent working style and flexibility to support various research projects
  • Strong willingness to learn new techniques with a focus on precision
  • Initiative and organizational skills to enhance daily lab operations
  • Fluency in spoken and written English; good German language skills are desirable
