Laboratory Technician Position at the RNA Biology and Disease Laboratory

The RNA Biology and Disease laboratory at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biophysics (Department of Biology), ETH Zurich, is seeking a laboratory technician to support its daily research activities and laboratory operations.

About the Laboratory

The lab focuses on mammalian gene regulation and RNA processing pathways. Our projects utilize a combination of structural, biochemical, and cellular assays, including cryo-electron and light microscopy, gene editing, next-generation sequencing, proteomics, and reconstitution of large protein-RNA complexes from recombinant proteins. Through these advanced tools, we aim to uncover the molecular basis of disease mechanisms to identify novel treatment targets.

Role and Responsibilities

As a valued member of our laboratory team, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of the lab while supporting a variety of research projects. Your core responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting lab members with their projects and carrying out experiments, including cloning constructs and protein expression and purification from bacterial and insect cells.
  • Culturing mammalian tissue culture cell lines, transforming them for experiments, generating stable cell lines, and analyzing expression patterns (e.g., through immunofluorescence, western blotting, or RT-qPCR).
  • Maintaining thorough documentation of lab work and updating internal databases.
  • Independently organizing and coordinating repairs and maintenance of laboratory equipment.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • A completed apprenticeship as a laboratory technician or a Master's degree in biochemistry, biology, or related fields.
  • Experience in molecular and cell biological techniques as well as biochemical methods, preferably including RNA handling.
  • An independent working style and flexibility to support various research projects.
  • A strong willingness to learn new techniques and a commitment to precision in your work.
  • Effective initiative and organizational skills to enhance daily lab operations.
  • Fluency in both spoken and written English; good German language skills are desirable.

What We Offer

Join a stimulating position within a welcoming and motivated international team dedicated to fundamental biochemical research. Our innovative work environment allows you to:

  • Apply your strengths to advance basic research and learn state-of-the-art techniques.
  • Enjoy a vibrant workplace at ETH Campus on Hönggerberg, close to Zurich.
  • Benefit from excellent working conditions at ETH, including public transport season tickets, car sharing, a wide range of sports offered by ASVZ, childcare, and attractive pension benefits.
