Laboratory Technician / Laboratory Technicianess

ETH Zurich - April 4, 2026

Laboratory Technician in Rapid Organism Detection Through Environmental DNA Using CRISPR-Cas

60%-80%, Zurich, Fixed-Term

The Laboratory of Ecosystems and Landscape Evolution (ELE) and the Genome Engineering and Measurement Lab (GEML) at ETH Zurich are seeking a dedicated laboratory technician to join a project focused on developing rapid CRISPR-based environmental DNA (eDNA) detection technologies. The Laboratory of Ecosystem and Landscape Evolution studies the mechanisms that shape biodiversity patterns across spatial and temporal scales and their response to global changes. GEML is a knowledge and technology hub aimed at aligning the scientific community with rapidly evolving genome engineering methods and techniques. This position is part of a collaborative, interdisciplinary effort that merges biodiversity research, molecular biology, and engineering, placing a strong emphasis on translating scientific innovation into practical environmental solutions.

Project Background

The systematic monitoring of living organisms—from pathogens and pests to agricultural species and biodiversity—is increasingly crucial for ensuring long-term societal well-being. A significant challenge in this field is the early, reliable, and efficient detection of disruptive species (e.g., pests and pathogens), allowing for timely intervention and informed management decisions. In this project, we are creating a programmable rapid eDNA detection platform, based on CRISPR-Cas reactions, for fast and cost-effective organism detection across various environmental settings.

Job Description

  • We are establishing the early foundations of a new venture and seek a motivated individual to join the project at this formative stage.
  • The role is designed for someone eager to contribute to the development of a potential spin-off, should the project demonstrate traction and a strong mutual alignment.
  • The successful candidate will be responsible for collecting and processing eDNA samples from various environments, as well as developing, testing, and optimizing molecular reactions and detection methods under both lab and field conditions.
  • This includes executing and refining molecular biology workflows, independently troubleshooting experiments, and enhancing robustness and reproducibility.
  • The role also involves supporting the generation of high-quality, reproducible data suitable for intellectual property (IP) development, regulatory pathways, and potential commercial use.
  • The technician will collaborate closely with the project lead to shape technical direction, establish priorities, and iteratively refine the platform.
  • Given the applied nature of the project, the position requires collaboration with external partners and the ability to communicate effectively with various stakeholders as the project matures and demonstrates scientific and commercial viability.

Duration: The position is fixed for 12 months (80%). The project is expected to continue within an ETH spin-off.

Profile

  • Master's degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, biomedical engineering, or related fields.
  • Hands-on experience with standard molecular laboratory techniques (e.g., DNA/RNA extractions, PCR, qPCR).
  • Experience in method development and testing protocols under laboratory conditions.
  • Ability to work independently, plan and document experiments, and execute protocols efficiently.
  • Strong interest in translating scientific findings into applications, including IP and commercialization.
  • Willingness to engage in broader venture-building activities.
  • Industrial or product design experience is an advantage.
  • Experience with CRISPR-Cas protocols and environmental DNA samples would be a plus.
  • Ability to integrate concepts from different disciplines efficiently and adapt to evolving project needs.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills (English + one official Swiss language).

Workplace

You will collaborate with a team of scientists (technicians, graduate students, postdocs, and senior scientists) to streamline and optimize experimental procedures in the CRISPR/eDNA research domain. The focus will be on both fundamental and applied research, providing diverse projects and opportunities for involvement. Join an international, vibrant team with the unique chance to continually develop your interpersonal and methodological skills.

  • A stimulating academic environment at one of the world's leading technical universities.
  • The opportunity to contribute to impactful projects that benefit biodiversity.
  • Engagement in a highly collaborative environment that promotes the continuous refinement and expansion of your skills.
