ETH Zurich - March 16, 2026

Laboratory Technician in Rapid Organism Detection through Environmental DNA Using CRISPR-Cas

Position Overview

The Laboratory of Ecosystems and Landscape Evolution (ELE) and the Genome Engineering and Measurement Lab (GEML) at ETH Zurich are seeking a dedicated laboratory technician to join a project aimed at developing rapid CRISPR-based environmental DNA (eDNA) detection technologies. The Laboratory of Ecosystem and Landscape Evolution investigates the mechanisms shaping biodiversity patterns across various spatial and temporal scales and their responses to global changes. GEML serves as a knowledge and technology hub, bridging the scientific community with rapidly advancing genome engineering methods and techniques. This role is situated within a collaborative, interdisciplinary effort that integrates biodiversity research, molecular biology, and engineering, with a strong emphasis on translating scientific innovations into practical environmental solutions.

Project Background

Systematic monitoring of living organisms—ranging from pathogens and pests to agricultural species and biodiversity—is increasingly vital for ensuring long-term societal well-being. A significant challenge in this domain is the early, reliable, and efficient detection of disruptive species, enabling timely interventions and informed management decisions. This project aims to create a programmable rapid eDNA detection platform based on CRISPR-Cas reactions for fast and cost-effective organism detection across diverse environmental contexts.

Job Description

  • Join the project at a formative stage, contributing to the establishment of a new venture.
  • Engage with the development of a potential spin-off, contingent upon project traction and mutual alignment.
  • Responsible for the collection and processing of eDNA samples across various environments.
  • Develop, test, and optimize molecular reactions and detection methods in both laboratory and field conditions.
  • Execute and refine molecular biology workflows, troubleshoot independently, and enhance robustness and reproducibility.
  • Support the generation of high-quality, reproducible data suitable for intellectual property (IP) development and potential commercial use.
  • Collaborate closely with the project lead to shape technical direction, set priorities, and iteratively refine the platform.
  • Work with external partners and effectively communicate with various stakeholders as the project matures and demonstrates scientific and commercial viability.

Duration

The position is fixed for 12 months (80%). The project is expected to continue within an ETH spin-off.

Profile

  • Master’s degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, biomedical engineering, or related fields.
  • Hands-on experience with standard molecular laboratory techniques (e.g., DNA/RNA extractions, PCR, qPCR).
  • Experience in developing and testing methods under laboratory conditions.
  • Ability to work independently, plan and document experiments, and execute protocols efficiently.
  • Strong interest in translating scientific findings into applications, including IP and commercialization.
  • Willingness to engage in wider venture-building activities.
  • Industrial or product design experience is advantageous.
  • Experience with CRISPR-Cas protocols and environmental DNA samples is a plus.
  • Ability to integrate concepts from various disciplines and adapt to evolving project needs.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills (English + one official Swiss language).

We Offer

You will collaborate with a team of scientists (technicians, graduate students, postdocs, and senior scientists) to streamline and optimize experimental procedures in the CRISPR/eDNA research domain. The focus will be on both basic and applied research, providing various projects and opportunities for involvement. Join an international, dynamic team, where you can continuously refine and expand your interpersonal and methodological skills.

  • A stimulating academic environment at one of the world's leading technical universities.
  • The opportunity to contribute to impactful projects in support of biodiversity.
  • Work within an international vibrant team that allows for personal and professional growth.
