Laboratory Technician / Laboratory Technicianess

ETH Zürich - March 16, 2026

Job Opportunity: Laboratory Technician

The Laboratory of Ecosystems and Landscape Evolution (ELE) and the Genome Engineering and Measurement Lab (GEML) at ETH Zurich are seeking a motivated laboratory technician to join a groundbreaking project focused on developing rapid CRISPR-based environmental DNA (eDNA) detection technologies. The Laboratory of Ecosystem and Landscape Evolution investigates the mechanisms that shape biodiversity patterns across various spatial and temporal scales and assesses responses to global changes. GEML serves as a hub for knowledge and technology, aligning the scientific community with rapidly evolving genome engineering methods and techniques.

This position is part of a collaborative, interdisciplinary project that integrates biodiversity research, molecular biology, and engineering, with a strong emphasis on translating scientific innovations into practical environmental solutions.

About the Project

The systematic monitoring of living organisms—including pathogens, pests, and agricultural species—has become increasingly essential for ensuring long-term societal well-being. A significant challenge in this field is the early, reliable, and efficient detection of disruptive species (such as pests or pathogens), which facilitates timely interventions and informed management decisions. Our project aims to develop a programmable, rapid eDNA detection platform, utilizing CRISPR-Cas reactions for fast and cost-effective organism detection across diverse environmental settings.

As we lay the groundwork for this new venture, we are looking for a candidate who is eager to contribute to the development of a potential spin-off, contingent upon the project's success and strong mutual alignment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collect and process eDNA samples from various environments.
  • Develop, test, and optimize molecular reactions and detection methods in both laboratory and field conditions.
  • Execute and refine molecular biology workflows while independently troubleshooting experiments.
  • Support the generation of high-quality, reproducible data suitable for intellectual property (IP) development and potential commercial use.
  • Work closely with the project lead to shape technical direction, set priorities, and iteratively refine the platform.
  • Collaborate with external partners and communicate effectively with various stakeholders as the project evolves.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, biomedical engineering, or related fields.
  • Hands-on experience with standard molecular laboratory techniques (e.g., DNA/RNA extractions, PCR, qPCR).
  • Experience in method development and testing protocols under laboratory conditions.
  • Ability to work independently, plan and document experiments, and execute protocols efficiently.
  • Strong interest in translating scientific findings into applications, including IP and commercialization.
  • Willingness to engage in broader venture-building activities.
  • Industrial or product design experience is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with CRISPR-Cas protocols and environmental DNA samples is a plus.
  • Ability to integrate concepts from different disciplines and adapt to evolving project needs.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills (English + one official Swiss language).

As a member of our research team, you will collaborate with a diverse group of scientists, including technicians, graduate students, postdocs, and senior scientists, aimed at streamlining and optimizing experimental procedures within the CRISPR/eDNA research domain. This role will focus not only on basic research but also on applied research fields, offering a variety of projects and opportunities to engage with cutting-edge developments. Additionally, you will enjoy working in an international, vibrant team and have the unique chance to refine and expand your interpersonal and methodological skills.

What We Offer

  • A stimulating academic environment at one of the world's leading technical universities.
  • The opportunity to contribute to impactful projects that favor biodiversity.
  • Work in an international, vibrant team that enhances personal and professional growth.
