ETH Zurich is one of the world’s leading universities specializing in science and technology. At the Institute of Agricultural Science, the Animal Physiology Group addresses reproductive challenges in humans, livestock, and wildlife. We have strong expertise in assisted reproductive technologies (ART) in livestock and wildlife species, as well as in the analysis of steroids at very low levels utilizing both immunoassay and mass spectrometry (MS) based techniques.
In vitro fertilization (IVF) is routinely applied in fertility clinics, and despite significant improvements in success rates over the past decade, there remains an urgent need to enhance hormonal stimulation protocols. Individual variation in response to these protocols is considerable among women. Currently, the underlying mechanistic causes of these heterogeneous responses and predictive biomarkers remain unidentified. As part of an interdisciplinary team that includes human reproductive clinicians, veterinarians, bioinformaticians, and biochemists, we are conducting a comparative study that collects both ultrasound images and blood samples to monitor and model follicular development in both humans and female cattle.
A substantial number of blood samples have been collected at various stages of human and bovine follicular development. These samples are now ready for analysis of reproductive hormones such as FSH and estradiol using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Both in-house and commercial ELISAs will be utilized, and assay development and validation will be carried out for target analytes that lack available assays.
