Laboratory Technician for the Analysis of Environmental DNA / Laboratory Technicianess for the Analysis of Environmental DNA

ETH Zürich - December 10, 2025

Position Announcement: Laboratory Technician at ETH Zurich

The Laboratory of Ecosystem and Landscape Evolution at ETH Zurich is seeking a motivated and skilled technician to join our international research team. Our laboratory comprises diverse scientific experts dedicated to understanding biodiversity and its intricate patterns across both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. We utilize advanced methodologies, including biological monitoring, environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis, remote sensing, and field sampling, to address key questions related to biodiversity in the context of global changes.

About Us

Our commitment extends beyond basic science; we actively translate findings into practical applications that address pressing environmental challenges. With anthropogenic activities disrupting natural ecosystems and affecting societal functions, monitoring living organisms has become crucial. This monitoring can be effectively achieved through eDNA technologies, which allow for rapid and cost-efficient tracking of various species across multiple sites. Our research aims to uncover the natural and anthropogenic drivers of biodiversity and enhance our understanding of ecosystem dynamics and landscape evolution.

Job Responsibilities

As a Laboratory Technician, you will support a wide range of molecular laboratory tasks, focusing primarily on the processing of eDNA samples. Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Executing established molecular biology procedures, including eDNA and sedimentary DNA extraction, PCR, and library preparation.
  • Managing the workflow of environmental samples from reception to sequencing.
  • Maintaining and organizing clean laboratory spaces and general lab areas.
  • Overseeing laboratory logistics, including inventory management, consumable ordering, and equipment upkeep.
  • Ensuring adherence to high standards of cleanliness and contamination control in the clean lab.
  • Supporting the maintenance and organization of the eDNA biobank.
  • Preparing and assembling sampling kits for field campaigns.
  • Training others in eDNA extraction and library preparation protocols.
  • Working independently while following established procedures and safety guidelines.

This is a fixed-term position associated with a project with a duration of four years.

Qualifications

We are searching for a well-organized, precise, and motivated technician with proven experience in molecular biology. Essential qualifications include:

  • Completed training as a laboratory technician or equivalent education in molecular biology or a related field.
  • Hands-on experience with molecular techniques, particularly DNA extraction from environmental samples, PCR, and library preparation.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to follow established protocols with precision.
  • Independent problem-solving capability and effective task management.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, demonstrating a team-oriented mindset.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English.
  • Willingness to travel for conducting DNA extractions and training collaborators in other laboratories.

Additional Assets

  • Experience in ecological or environmental applications of molecular biology.
  • Familiarity with bioinformatics or a willingness to develop such skills.

Why Join Us?

You will have the opportunity to work in a stimulating academic environment at one of the world's leading technical universities. Join an international and vibrant team where you can continuously enhance your interpersonal and methodological skills while contributing to impactful projects focused on biodiversity.
