The Biomedical and Mobile Health Technology (BMHT) Lab at the Department of Health Sciences and Technology, ETH Zurich, is an interdisciplinary research group with expertise in material science, engineering, and computing. The lab focuses on sensing technologies for electronic textiles, with applications in sports and health. To strengthen its operations, the BMHT Lab is seeking a highly qualified individual to serve as Lab Manager and Scientific Coordinator in the areas of material science and electronics for electronic textiles.

Project Background

The role of Lab Manager and Scientific Coordinator in the BMHT lab involves assisting in the supervision and coordination of scientific staff, managing collaborations with research partners, and supporting the lab's teaching activities. The successful candidate will also be responsible for ensuring lab safety in accordance with Swiss and ETH Zurich standards and regulations.

Job Description

  • Support the Head of the Organizational Unit in developing and maintaining the group-specific Safety Concept. Coordinate occupational safety and health protection training, hazard assessments, and safety documentation. Serve as the Group Safety Representative (GSR), overseeing audits, inspections, and liaising with occupational safety specialists.
  • Provide technical oversight and support for ongoing research projects, ensuring alignment with the lab's objectives. Support the next generation of scientists (PhD students, postdocs), fostering a collaborative and productive research environment. Key areas of support include design analysis, material development, chemical synthesis, and device characterization, with attention to safety and ethical standards.
  • Coordinate and supervise research students, and contribute scientific support to projects in wearable technologies and electronic textiles. Assist with scientific writing for publications and grant proposals.
  • Participate in teaching activities, including delivering lectures, developing course materials, conducting assessments, and advising students in the lab's research areas.
  • Manage lab equipment and infrastructure, including procurement of materials and devices, coordinating equipment usage, liaising with other labs for shared resources, and organizing lab space.
  • Assist in grant reporting, covering both technical and financial aspects.
  • Ensure the smooth operation of wet and dry lab facilities, including inventory management of consumables, PPE, and tools. Provide guidance to researchers on proper use of lab facilities and equipment.

Profile

  • A PhD in Physical Chemistry.
  • University-level teaching experience in electronics.
  • Experience as a Group Safety Representative (GSR), including participation in safety audits.
  • Proven expertise in electronic textiles, triboelectric nanogenerators, and non-invasive wearable devices, demonstrated through co-authorship in scientific publications.
  • Experience in procuring scientific equipment.
  • Experience in grant writing and reporting.
  • Practical knowledge of lab safety and experience as a contact person during safety audits.
  • Proficiency in English and at least one official language of the Swiss Confederation.
  • Experience supervising and mentoring student theses and projects.
  • A strong track record of scientific publications.
  • Excellent teamwork, organizational and planning skills, a solution-oriented mindset, and creativity with the ability to innovate.
  • Possess social and leadership competencies suitable for working with others in an academic institution, including acting responsibly, nurturing well-being, driving innovation, fostering inclusivity, building bridges, and enabling people.

Workplace

You will be supervised by Prof. Dr. Carlo Menon at ETH Zurich. His group is a team of imaginative builders who use their knowledge in materials science, engineering, computer science, and medicine to find bold, creative solutions to real-world problems. Prof. Menon's lab is located in the Balgrist Campus, designed to foster collaboration. Built in 2015, the building's open architecture is geared towards interdisciplinary research to promote innovation, research translation, and increase impact. The facility houses rapid prototyping machines, exoskeletons, instrumented treadmills, two MRI systems, two CT scan machines, wet labs, and characterization systems, among other equipment. You will work where the fields of electronics, signal processing, textiles, artificial intelligence, edge computing, biomedical engineering, physiology, and technology for wearable/mobile devices meet, at one of the world’s leading universities focusing on research and technology.
