Job Overview
The International Commercial Lead for Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) will serve as the cross-functional leader of the SMA International Center of Excellence. This role will chair and lead forums for brand strategy planning over an 18 to 24-month period, refining strategies for local market execution with input and alignment across key geographies. The International Commercial Lead will be responsible for steering the cross-functional integrated customer strategy while guiding the international organization through the launch of Spinraza High Dose and defining competitive strategies for SMA. Collaborating with Value & Access, they will determine the launch sequence and review business cases for market expansion. The incumbent will have full accountability for commercial launch excellence and execution, while also partnering with Product Development and Commercialization on lifecycle management initiatives for the SMA franchise, which includes Thecaflex and Salanersen, as well as the go-to-market model.
Principal Accountability
- Cross-functional Leadership & Affiliates Engagement:
- Lead cross-functional partners (Marketing, Medical, Market Access, Patient Advocacy Groups, Communications, Customer Excellence & Operations, etc.) to evolve the integrated customer plan for SMA with a high degree of alignment and focus.
- Facilitate the International Therapeutic Area Council (ITAC) to co-create the brand strategy by engaging key internal partners from top affiliates.
- Communicate the international brand strategy and tactics effectively across the broader organization.
- Commercial Strategy:
- Lead a commercial team to produce on-strategy content and provide guidance and tools to support brand growth objectives in local markets.
- Manage the end-to-end process of delivering content for an omnichannel digital strategy.
- Set and manage an international commercial budget that reflects growth strategies based on sound assumptions.
- Differentiated Communication:
- Collaborate with scientific communications, corporate affairs, and patient advocacy to develop powerful and differentiated messaging for the product, guiding local affiliates in leveraging relevant data to activate the market effectively.
- Competitive Readiness & Metrics:
- Conduct comprehensive competitive assessments alongside the Customer & Market Intelligence (CMI) team and evaluate key brand performance metrics to inform brand strategy, ensuring clear delivery of metric summaries to leadership.
- Input in Lifecycle Management Decisions:
- Support lifecycle management (LCM) programs and major initiatives through the execution of business cases for investment.
Minimum Experience Requirements
- Bachelor's degree required; MBA preferred.
- 12+ years of commercial experience in pharma or biotech, with preference for rare diseases.
- A strong track record in developing robust global marketing strategies that support brand growth goals and ensure strategic alignment across regions.
- Global and/or affiliate in-line marketing experience required, with demonstrated accountability to the P&L preferred.
- Proficiency in financial reporting and budget management, with the ability to develop and support a business case for investment.
- Demonstrated expertise in creating brand architecture that enhances global branding, positioning, and competitive messaging.
- Strong scientific curiosity with the ability to extract insights for competitive differentiation.
- Excellent leadership skills, including a minimum of 5 years leading teams directly.
- Proven ability to make difficult decisions, prioritize tasks, motivate teams, and inspire cross-functional partners.
- Previous sales experience or roles with significant interaction with customers are highly valued; experience in pipeline or commercial development is welcome.
- An analytical and problem-solving mindset to leverage data for strategic insights.
- Superb communication and interpersonal skills, with the capability to write and deliver compelling presentations to professionals at all levels within Biogen and external customers.
