Intern in AI applied to Architecture and Engineering / Interness in AI applied to Architecture and Engineering

ETH Zürich - July 29, 2025

Swiss Data Science Center

The Swiss Data Science Center (SDSC) is a National Research Infrastructure jointly founded by EPFL and ETH Zurich, and is part of the ETH Domain. Our mission is to support academic labs, hospitals, industry, and public sector stakeholders—including cantonal and federal administrations—through their entire data science journey, from data collection and management to machine learning, AI, and industrialization.

With a large multidisciplinary team of professionals across three locations (Lausanne, Zurich, Villigen), the SDSC provides expertise and services in various domains, such as health and biomedical sciences, energy and sustainability, climate and environment, and large-scale scientific infrastructures.

In collaboration with experts in architecture and engineering, we have developed a tool called AIXD for AI-assisted forward and inverse design. Currently, we are enhancing this tool by developing a plugin to enable Virtual Reality (VR) exploration of the design space. This initiative aims to improve the interpretability and understanding of the possibilities and limitations of design problems by implementing additional embedding models in the AIXD Python core to capture the structure and organization of geometries within the design space.

Internship Opportunity

We are offering an internship at the Research Team at SDSC to further investigate embedding models, implement and evaluate them, and develop new features for the AIXD toolbox. You will collaborate with domain experts and other data scientists to ensure the successful development of these new features. As part of the SDSC, you will be immersed in a dynamic team applying machine learning methods across various fields—from environmental to political sciences—allowing you to gain valuable insights and skills required for interdisciplinary research.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct software development of the AIXD toolbox by implementing new features.
  • Investigate new embedding methods to capture the structure and organization of the design space.
  • Implement new visualization approaches to help interpret the data and AIXD results.
  • Carry out standard tasks in debugging and documentation of the AIXD toolbox.

Candidate Profile

  • You are a developer with a BSc or MSc in Computer Science or related fields, possessing proven experience in software development.
  • You have experience with Python, PyTorch, and UI frameworks such as Flask.
  • You possess expertise in machine learning and data science.
  • You can effectively present complex results as appealing and informative visualizations.

Internship Details

This is a 5-month internship based at our SDSC Zürich office, conveniently located in Oerlikon, with a start date as soon as possible! You will benefit from:

  • A stimulating, collaborative, cross-disciplinary environment in a world-class research institution, working alongside 40 data scientists from over 15 different countries.
  • A focus on applying and developing novel machine learning methods to real-world problems.
  • A strong emphasis on work-life balance.
  • Opportunities for experimentation and creativity, promoting the learning of new technologies and approaches on the job.
