Swiss Data Science Center Internship Opportunity

The Swiss Data Science Center (SDSC) is a National Research Infrastructure jointly founded by EPFL and ETH Zurich and is part of the ETH Domain. Our mission is to support academic labs, hospitals, industry partners, and public sector stakeholders, including cantonal and federal administrations, throughout their entire data science journey—from data collection and management to machine learning, AI, and industrialization.

With a large multidisciplinary team of professionals across three locations (Lausanne, Zurich, and Villigen), the SDSC provides expertise and services across various domains including health and biomedical sciences, energy and sustainability, climate and environment, and large-scale scientific infrastructures.

Internship Description

In collaboration with experts in architecture and engineering, we have developed a tool called AIXD for AI-assisted forward and inverse design. We are currently developing a plugin to enable Virtual Reality (VR) exploration of the design space, which will enhance the interpretability and understanding of the possibilities and limitations of the problem. This involves implementing additional embedding models in the AIXD Python core to effectively capture the geometrical structure and organization within the design space.

We are offering an internship in the Research Team at SDSC, focusing on the investigation of embedding models, their implementation and evaluation, as well as the development of new features for the AIXD toolbox. You will collaborate with domain experts and other data scientists to ensure the successful development of these AIXD features. As part of the SDSC, you will join a dynamic team dedicated to applying machine learning methods across various fields—from environmental to political sciences. This opportunity will provide you with a deeper understanding of interdisciplinary research and the necessary skills for impactful work.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct software development for the AIXD toolbox by implementing new features.
  • Investigate new embedding methods to capture the structure and organization of the design space.
  • Implement new visualization approaches that enhance understanding of the data and AIXD results.
  • Carry out standard tasks such as debugging and documentation of the AIXD toolbox.

Qualifications

  • BSc or MSc in Computer Science or a related field, with proven experience in software development.
  • Proficiency in Python, PyTorch, and UI frameworks such as Flask.
  • Expertise in machine learning and data science.
  • Ability to present complex results as appealing and informative plots.

What We Offer

  • A 5-month internship at the SDSC Zürich office, conveniently located in Oerlikon, with a start date as soon as possible.
  • A stimulating, collaborative, cross-disciplinary environment within a world-class research institution, where you will be part of a team of 40 data scientists from over 15 different countries, all focused on applying and developing innovative ML methods to address real-world challenges.
  • A strong emphasis on work-life balance.
  • Opportunities to experiment and be creative, with active support for learning new technologies and approaches on the job.

If you are proficient in Python and software development, knowledgeable about machine learning methods, and eager to engage in fascinating interdisciplinary research, we would love for you to join us and advance this project.
