Interdisciplinary PhD Position in Space Sciences and Cancer Research (Male/Female)

Universität Bern - June 8, 2025

Join Our Pioneering PhD Project

Are you interested in exploring the cosmos while contributing to groundbreaking advancements in cancer surgery techniques? This unique PhD project combines the pursuit of life beyond Earth with the development of novel instrumentation for cancer surgery.

Project Overview

The focus of this doctoral research will be on the creation of a compact sensor head capable of analyzing the full state of polarization of an incoming light beam at multiple wavelengths. This innovative technique, known as spectro-polarimetry, holds significant promise for improving the detection of pancreatic tumor margins and may facilitate the discovery of unambiguous biosignatures in the quest for extraterrestrial life. Initial implementations are planned for endoscopes and satellite payloads, providing an exciting frontier for medical and scientific exploration.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to play a vital role in the medical applications and scientific utilization of these cutting-edge devices, working alongside an interdisciplinary team of experts in various fields including cancer research, tissue pathology, medical imaging, computer science, robotics, astrophysics, planetary science, microbiology, and engineering.

Candidate Profile

We seek a creative and motivated individual who is a team player with a strong interest in instrumentation. The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A Master’s degree in engineering, biomedicine, optics, physics, mathematics, chemistry, biology, or computer science.
  • Expertise in numerical modeling and optics, particularly polarization, is advantageous but not mandatory.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
