Job Opportunity: Creative Interaction Designer
We are on the lookout for a talented Interaction Designer to create compelling visual experiences and digital assets. In this role, you will transform complex data and concepts into clear, engaging visuals while collaborating closely with our engineering team to bring ideas to life.
The scope of work may encompass up to 60% for one project, with potential expansion to 100% for two projects based on the right candidate's skills.
Our team, in collaboration with partners from both academia and industry, is engaged in pioneering visualization projects. At the IVIA lab, our primary research focuses on studying interactive human-AI collaboration interfaces aimed at effective problem-solving and decision-making. We seek to empower humans by integrating AI agents in co-adaptive processes. To support our innovative endeavors, we invite a motivated Interaction Designer to join our team. The ideal candidate should have a structured and hands-on approach and thrive in a small, interdisciplinary team.
This position is offered on a fixed-term basis for one year.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and create digital assets including icons, SVGs, illustrations, and logos.
- Develop interactive widgets and visualizations that effectively convey complex content, incorporating gamification elements such as storytelling and user flow.
- Create mockups, wireframes, and prototypes using Figma, Penpot, or similar tools.
- Design modern, visually appealing web layouts and UI components.
- Produce data visualizations (static, animated, or interactive) utilizing tools like d3.js.
- Collaborate with developers to ensure seamless translation of designs into code.
- Contribute to brand identity through logo development, visual guidelines, and style systems.
Qualifications
- A degree in Interaction Design, Visual Communication, Graphic Design, or a related field.
- A background in Motion Design, 2D Animation, or Digital Illustration/Animation is highly valued.
- A portfolio that explicitly showcases past projects relevant to the job requirements (web design, gamification, animation, and interactive visuals) is required.
- Proficiency in design tools, particularly Figma, Penpot, and Adobe Creative Suite (specifically After Effects); experience with Affinity Suite is a plus.
- Experience creating SVG assets and vector graphics for the web.
- Familiarity with HTML/CSS and basic frontend concepts; experience with Onlook is a plus.
- Knowledge of d3.js or other visualization libraries is a strong advantage.
- Experience with real camera recording embeddings is beneficial, but not mandatory.
- An eye for typography, color, and layout.
- The ability to distill complex information into clear visual narratives.
- Experience in research or scientific communication is a plus.
- A proactive, creative thinker who enjoys iterative design processes.
- Demonstrated fluency in English (written and spoken), with effective communication skills; knowledge of German is advantageous.
