Innovation Postdoctoral Fellow in Neuronal Aging / Innovation Postdoctoral Fellowess in Neuronal Aging

Novartis Pharma AG - July 21, 2025

Job ID

REQ-10057139

Overview

We are excited to announce an opening for our Innovation Fellowship track within the Novartis Postdoctoral Fellowship Program.

About the Role

This applied research program aims to transform the approach to drug discovery. As a fellow, you will harness your skills to make a significant impact for patients while reimagining medicine at Novartis.

Drug hunting is inherently a collaborative endeavor. You will gain invaluable experience in drug discovery by working alongside a multidisciplinary team in Biomedical Research. Seize the opportunity to be at the forefront of the future of drug discovery!

As part of the Innovation Fellowship track, you will join our vibrant and dedicated postdoctoral community, participating in events such as monthly seminars and other scheduled activities. You will be supported by a collaborative network of postdocs and scientists, providing a stimulating environment for your scientific and professional development. This includes opportunities for a Postdoc Practicum in another laboratory or a business function within Novartis. The applied research program spans a duration of three years.

Current human-induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) and embryonic stem cell (ES)-derived neurons are often immature, limiting their efficacy in modeling disease-relevant phenotypes, particularly for age-related disorders. Overcoming this limitation by enhancing maturation and introducing aging components is essential for developing more accurate models of neurodegenerative diseases. Addressing these aspects is critical, as aging is a significant factor in these conditions and is often missing from current in vitro models.

The two primary objectives of this innovation postdoc are:

  • How can we advance the maturity of patient-derived induced neuronal cells?
  • How can we accelerate the aging processes of these mature neurons to mimic neurodegenerative disease-like states?

Through the Novartis Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, you will enhance your skills as a drug hunter and as a scientific leader in the field. You will build connections in a professional network that supports your growth and offers you the opportunity to tackle significant health challenges by reimagining medicine collaboratively.

Preferred Start Date: October 2025

Location: Campus Basel

Key Responsibilities

As an Innovation Postdoctoral Fellow, you will:

  • Work independently and collaboratively within interdisciplinary teams.
  • Design and execute experiments related to neuronal aging, including data collection, analysis, and interpretation.
  • Utilize literature research to identify suitable protocols for developing innovative approaches to iPSC maturation and aging.
  • Establish efficient cycles for testing and optimizing new protocol ideas.
  • Conduct benchmark experiments to validate the maturity and aging of neuronal systems.

Role Requirements

  • A PhD in molecular biology, neuroscience, tissue engineering, or a related field.
  • PhD students in their final year of thesis work are eligible. Applicants can apply up to two years after obtaining their PhD (PhD degrees must have been awarded in May 2023 or later).
  • Experience in neuronal cell culture, iPSC, complex in vitro systems, and cellular aging.
  • A strong publication record or other scientific achievements (awards, patents, grants).
  • Excellent analytical, communication, presentation, and organizational skills.
  • A passion for fundamental exploratory research and a strong sense of curiosity.
