Teaching and Learning
- A proven track record of delivering impactful lessons in Science, Chemistry, and Biology to Secondary and 6th Form students.
- Delivering excellence in teaching based on a profound understanding of Science, Chemistry, Biology, and their pedagogical approaches.
- Creating a challenging and stimulating classroom atmosphere that encourages students to learn, think independently, take risks, empathize with others, and achieve their maximum potential.
- Supporting students in their learning journey, fostering an inclusive, secure, and valued environment that ensures they can thrive.
- Adhering to agreed guidelines, syllabuses, and schemes of learning, with a thorough knowledge of the requirements for British public examinations and the national curriculum. Familiarity with the Pearson Edexcel Curriculum will be advantageous.
- Utilizing a diverse range of digital and physical resources to enhance learning, as well as organizing engaging visits, activities, trips, guest speakers, and fieldwork pertinent to Science, Chemistry, and Biology (as coordinated with the Curriculum Lead).
- Effectively communicating with parents and pupils on all matters related to the Science, Chemistry, and Biology curriculum, teaching, pastoral care, and learning progress while maintaining high standards and expectations.
Recording and Assessment
- A solid understanding of Secondary and 6th Form Assessment Objectives linked to major UK and International exam boards such as AQA, Pearson Edexcel, or OCR.
- Marking all work consistently and promptly in accordance with the marking policy and departmental schemes of learning, ensuring students receive frequent and constructive feedback.
- Regularly assessing student performance and monitoring progress relative to prior attainment, implementing effective intervention strategies as necessary to enhance pupil achievement.
- Thoroughly preparing for lessons and assigning homework consistently per school expectations to help students achieve the highest standards. This includes developing schemes of work for courses assigned (in alignment with the Curriculum Lead).
- Producing detailed reports on the progress and achievements of students as requested.
Other Responsibilities
- Attending all relevant meetings and participating in parent-teacher-student conferences for the groups taught, along with other events as assigned.
- Actively participating in the extra-curricular offerings provided by the department, which include advising A level students on Oxbridge and other university options where applicable; running help clubs and clinics; and engaging fully in new departmental initiatives.
- Promoting student achievements, career opportunities, and experiences in Science, Chemistry, and Biology by providing relevant content for the School SWAY Newsletter.
Skills, Qualifications, and Experience
- A minimum of three years teaching experience in Science, Chemistry, and Biology within a UK state or independent school or a recognized international institution offering the British Curriculum. (Early Career Teachers not suitable for this role).
- A degree in Science, Chemistry, or Biology from a recognized university or higher education institution.
- Proven record of outstanding GCSE results.
- Sound knowledge of the Science, Chemistry, and Biology National Curriculum, GCSE standards, and familiarity with UK/International exam boards such as AQA, OCR, or Pearson Edexcel (currently our examination board).
- Experience in teaching English as an Additional Language (EAL) and Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) students.
- An enthusiastic and creative approach to teaching that inspires pupils and makes learning engaging and relevant.
- A dedication to helping students develop a wide range of skills and attributes.
- A commitment to an interconnected curriculum and collaboration with colleagues across different disciplines.
- Excellent communication skills to effectively engage with students, colleagues, and parents, while working collaboratively as part of a team.
- An interest in education beyond the classroom experience across various age groups.
- A flexible attitude, a good sense of humor, and a willingness to contribute to all aspects of school life, including trips, projects, special events, and extracurricular clubs.
