Job Title: Systems Engineering / Storage Engineer

The Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (CSCS) is seeking a talented Storage Engineer to join our dynamic team in Lugano. As an integral part of our organization, you will engage in the implementation and management of HPC storage services within a multi-tenant infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, implement, maintain, and document storage services for HPC.
• Contribute to the development and enhancement of HPC systems, improving overall functionality and efficiency.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Strong proficiency in Linux system administration.
• Understanding of filesystem aspects and functions (data, metadata, block size, etc.).
• Knowledge of storage redundancy technologies (RAID, D-RAID, EC, etc.).
• Familiarity with backup concepts and solutions (DMF, TSM, Veeam).
• Experience with Object Storage concepts and the implementation/use of S3 services.
• Competency in automation tools and frameworks, including CI/CD processes (e.g., GitLab CI, HashiCorp Vault).
• Excellent command of English and good knowledge of Italian.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with parallel file systems (GPFS, Lustre).
• Experience with Ceph Storage Clusters.
• Familiarity with versioning systems and CI/CD workflows (e.g., ArgoCD).
• Experience with automated installation systems for physical servers (e.g., OpenCHAMI, MAAS, or Foreman).
• Knowledge of Ansible configuration development.
• Experience with developing services on top of Kubernetes.

Employment Details

• Work location: Lugano
• Full-time employment (80-100%) based on prior agreement, temporary position until 21.10.2027.
• Salary: To be negotiated.

The role will initially offer a two-year contract with the possibility of extension. It is funded by a project aimed at enabling scientists to leverage large-scale climate and earth observation data in collaboration with partners such as ETHZ Geolab, C2SM, and international organizations like ECMWF, NASA, and NOAA.
