The Center for Climate Systems Modeling (C2SM) at ETH and the Federal Institute of Meteorology and Climatology MeteoSwiss jointly develop and operate the weather and climate model called ICON. We are currently seeking a High Performance Computing (HPC) Software Engineer to advance the development and optimization of the ICON model (80-100%).
To leverage the latest advancements in hardware technology, the ICON model has been adapted to run on Graphics Processing Units (GPUs), making it one of the first models utilized in production on such hardware. Numerous technologies are under consideration for GPU execution; including compiler directives embedded in the code and, for some components, a complete rewrite utilizing a Python domain-specific language (DSL) named gt4py.

In this role, you will collaborate with a diverse and agile team of HPC experts and atmospheric scientists and provide support to users of downstream applications, such as hydrology.
