Job Purpose
The primary role of this position is to provide an adult presence within the House, ensuring the safeguarding, welfare, and security of students. This includes assisting the Houseparents (HPs) and their team in supervising students and maintaining the integrity of their living environment.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities
The responsibilities of this role encompass a variety of tasks, requiring a person who is generous with their time and responsive to the needs of the students. The following list outlines the core expectations, though it is not exhaustive, and it is anticipated that the post holder will demonstrate initiative and common sense in various situations:
- Be a supportive adult presence during designated hours and respond to emergencies.
- Provide physical and emotional care and security for the students.
- Collaborate with the HP, RAHP (Residential Assistant Houseparent), and other House staff to ensure effective operations of the House.
- Liaise with the Health Centre, Estates Department, and cleaning staff to facilitate essential student care and maintain the House.
General duties will include:
- Monitoring and following up on student attendance and punctuality.
- Conducting room checks for general tidiness and coordinating with cleaning staff.
- Ensuring students are dressed appropriately in their uniforms and PE/Sports/Expedition kits, liaising with Laundry staff as needed.
- Assisting with House administration, including maintaining House lists and other necessary documentation.
- Responding to emails, phone calls, and messages while supervising any visitors to the House.
- Communicating effectively with the HP and RAHP on student and House matters, ensuring handovers are complete and notice boards are updated.
- Attending training and support meetings as required.
- Managing the medicine cabinet and medical records in accordance with Health Centre guidelines.
- Supervising and maintaining records of students taking medication, ensuring all prescribed treatments are administered punctually.
Example of a Weekday House Routine
- 07:00: Wake-up routine, breakfast, assess any sick students, administer medication.
- 07:50: Ensure all students fit for school have departed the House; record attendance and medication.
- 08:00-10:15: Coordinate with HP or RAHP, Health Centre, Studies, PE, and Sport as necessary, and complete room checks.
- 10:15-10:45: Follow up with students during morning break.
- 11:45-12:00: Handover from House Assistant to RAHP or HP.
Safeguarding
It is crucial for the post holder to remain vigilant regarding the School’s Safeguarding guidelines and Staff Prudence code, maintaining a professional relationship with students based on trust and care. The individual will also:
- Undertake additional tasks as reasonably requested by the Director of Boarding to facilitate the smooth operation of the team.
- Understand and implement all school policies and procedures, particularly those related to child safeguarding.
- Embody the School’s Guiding Principles and uphold its ethos at all times.
