The Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering (D-BSSE) at ETH Zurich in Basel is seeking a head for the newly established Research Data Management Facility. This role is available for immediate start or to be agreed upon.

Job Description

In this role, you will take on significant responsibilities across strategic, technical, and organizational dimensions:

  • Establish and strategically develop the RDM unit.
  • Define and prioritize the departmental RDM strategy in line with ETH-wide as well as national and international developments.
  • Collaborate with research groups to identify specific needs and translate them into viable, sustainable system solutions.
  • Design, plan, and manage software projects from requirements engineering and stakeholder management to budget oversight.
  • Ensure the RDM systems utilized are FAIR-compliant, secure, efficient, and sustainably operated over the long term.
  • Actively participate in the design, prototyping, and further development of RDM infrastructures, preferably based on open-source technologies.
  • Work alongside the departmental IT Facility to ensure the rollout and reliable operation of systems.
  • Build and manage a small, specialized team, fostering the targeted development of the team's competencies.

Finally, you will represent the unit prominently within ETH and in national and international RDM networks.

Profile

  • PhD in natural sciences, engineering, computer science, or a comparable field.
  • Several years of experience in research data management.
  • In-depth knowledge of FAIR principles, open science standards, and regulatory requirements (e.g., data security).
  • Experience in designing and managing complex software projects.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to translate visions into tangible projects.
  • Management experience or strong leadership potential.
  • Excellent communication skills and a passion for interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • High level of independence, decisiveness, and sense of responsibility.
  • Proficient in English; knowledge of German is an advantage.
