About the AO Innovation Translation Center (AO ITC)
The AO ITC serves as the driving force behind innovation projects, focusing on the development of clinical solutions in partnership with industry stakeholders. Our activities encompass innovation gathering, proof-of-concept studies, strategic investment in intellectual property, technology, or companies, and the creation of evidence through clinical research.
Within the AO ITC, Clinical Operations acts as the service provider for clinical research, conducting global trials that deliver clinical insights pertinent to contemporary surgical practices, ultimately enhancing patient care.
Position Overview: Head of Medical Scientific Affairs
The Head of Medical Scientific Affairs plays a pivotal role in providing strategic and scientific leadership for AO's clinical evidence generation ecosystem. This position is accountable for ensuring that clinical research investments yield significant advancements in patient care and involves serving as a trusted scientific advisor to AO leadership and governance committees.
The responsibilities include developing a high-impact portfolio of clinical studies across various disciplines, optimizing resource allocation, and fostering effective collaboration throughout the AO ecosystem.
Main Responsibilities
- Lead the Medical Scientific Affairs team, promoting a collaborative and service-oriented culture.
- Define objectives, priorities, and performance expectations aligned with organizational strategy.
- Recruit and develop team members, ensuring the necessary competencies are in place.
- Collaborate closely with Clinical Operations on resource planning and allocation.
- Build effective partnerships across stakeholders to advance Clinical Research activities.
- Drive continuous improvement in Medical Scientific Affairs processes and establish a culture of scientific excellence.
- Lead the Clinical Science Advisory Commission (CSAC) and the AO ITC Clinical Research Fellowship Program.
- Support the AO PEER program.
Clinical Study Design & Scientific Support
- Develop clinical study protocols addressing key knowledge gaps in collaboration with stakeholders.
- Review and provide medical-scientific assessments of adverse events during study conduct.
- Offer expert advice on medical and scientific inquiries throughout study execution.
- Cooperate closely with Clinical Operations in study planning and implementation.
- Facilitate the interpretation of results in collaboration with relevant parties.
- Drive excellence in scientific publication and dissemination strategies.
Clinical Research Portfolio Strategy
- Lead discussions regarding future evidence needs and develop a strategic clinical research portfolio.
- Establish prioritization frameworks for research funding, addressing knowledge gaps and patient impact.
- Monitor portfolio performance and adapt research priorities based on emerging evidence.
- Ensure methodological rigor, regulatory compliance, and ethical conduct throughout the research lifecycle.
- Collaborate with Clinical Operations on grant acquisition and industry partnerships.
- Support the effective translation of clinical evidence into educational resources and practice.
Main Requirements
Professional & Technical Skills
- Advanced expertise in clinical research methodology.
- Strong understanding of orthopedic clinical practice.
- Experience in designing industry-sponsored clinical studies as a CRO.
- Excellent scientific writing and presentation skills.
- Sound understanding of regulatory requirements and Good Clinical Practice (GCP).
Education & Qualifications
- Medical Degree (MD) required.
- PhD or equivalent advanced scientific qualification is highly desirable.
- Formal training in related disciplines is advantageous.
Professional Experience
- Minimum 10 years of experience in clinical research within relevant disciplines.
- Experience in multicenter clinical studies from conception to publication.
- Strong track record in peer-reviewed publications and grant acquisition.
- Experience in leading interdisciplinary and cross-functional teams.
