Job Opportunity: Leadership Position in the Department of Design
The Department of Design at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) stands as one of Switzerland's leading design institutions. We merge education, research, and continuing professional development with an innovative approach to design. Our seven disciplines—Cast/Audiovisual Media, Game Design, Industrial Design, Interaction Design, Knowledge Visualization, Visual Communication, and Trends & Identity—empower students to explore fundamental questions of contemporary design and realize innovative projects. Our focus extends beyond aesthetic and functional considerations, advocating a reflective engagement with design.
Responsibilities
As a member of the leadership team, you will be responsible for:
- Setting the strategic direction and public profile of the department
- Ensuring the delivery of a contemporary study program aligned with professional standards and future challenges
- Fostering sustainable collaborations within and outside the university to enhance resources for teaching and research
- Representing the department across national and international networks, while adopting local and global perspectives
- Maintaining constructive relationships with key stakeholders in design, art, politics, society, and business
- Promoting interdisciplinary issues and innovations
- Participating in the university’s executive leadership meetings and serving on various committees
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess:
- A background in design or related disciplines
- Proven experience in leading complex organizational units, preferably in the higher education sector
- A university degree in a relevant field; a Ph.D. is valued but not required
- A strategic and analytical perspective to address opportunities and potential within the department
- Strong negotiation skills and decisiveness in leadership
- A clear vision for the future-oriented development of the Department of Design
- Excellent communication and facilitation skills
- A robust network within the higher education landscape and the design and cultural communities
- Proficiency in German and English
