Job Opportunity at the Central Animal Facility

The Central Animal Facility is the largest facility of the Experimental Animal Center (EAC) at the University of Bern, Switzerland. We are seeking a dedicated professional to lead our operations and ensure the highest standards of animal care.

Areas of Responsibility

  • Direct the operation of the Central Animal Facility, overseeing processes, finances, and personnel.
  • Provide veterinary clinical, surgical, and medical care to the animal population.
  • Supervise the hygiene and monitoring program.
  • Manage the animal stock using our database system.
  • Plan and participate in emergency, weekend, and holiday care.
  • Write, update, and implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Advise researchers on genetically modified mouse breeding and research procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with the Animal Welfare Act, University directives, and process specifications.
  • Participate in building renovation projects.
  • Support the ECLAM residency program and internal education initiatives.

Requirements

  • A doctorate in veterinary medicine and specialization in laboratory animal medicine (ECLAM/ACLAM diploma or board eligibility).
  • Practical experience in breeding genetically modified models; experience with fish or zebrafish is a plus.
  • Proven management experience and leadership in complex structures.
  • Strong team orientation and goal-driven mentality, with excellent communication skills.
  • Proficiency in English; knowledge of German is an advantage.
