Central Animal Facility at the University of Bern
The Central Animal Facility is the largest facility of the Experimental Animal Center (EAC) at the University of Bern, Switzerland.
Areas of Responsibility
- Direct the operation of the Central Animal Facility, including processes, finances, and personnel.
- Provide veterinary clinical, surgical, and medical care to the animal population.
- Supervise the hygiene and monitoring program.
- Manage the animal stock using the database system.
- Plan and participate in emergency, weekend, and holiday care.
- Write, update, and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Advise researchers on genetically modified mouse breeding and research procedures.
- Ensure compliance with regulations of the Animal Welfare Act, University directives, and process specifications.
- Participate in building renovation projects.
- Support the ECLAM residency program and internal education.
Requirements
- Doctorate in veterinary medicine with specialization in laboratory animal medicine (ECLAM/ACLAM diploma or board eligibility).
- Practical experience in breeding genetically modified models; experience with fish or zebrafish is a plus.
- Proven management experience and leadership in complex structures.
- Team-oriented, goal-focused, and possess excellent communication skills.
- Fluency in English; knowledge of German is an advantage.
