Guest Lecturer for TEACH A DESIGN STUDIO

70%, Zurich, Fixed-term

For the third time, the Department of Architecture (D-Arch) of ETH Zurich is seeking innovative approaches for studio teaching in architectural design. This opportunity is open to independent architects eager to share their vision for the future of architecture and construction in a new experimental design studio.

Job Description

The existing 25 design studios for Bachelor and Master students in Architecture present a variety of positions and methods aimed at synthesizing the evolving conditions of the world around us into thought, action, and proposals for buildings and environments that contribute to new forms of knowledge. Each of these positions specializes in:

  • Answering the Challenges of Climate Change
  • Fostering Digital Forms of Craftsmanship
  • Shaping Future Environments
  • Making the Past Productive
  • Empowering Design and Construction

The D-ARCH invites speculative and innovative positions that tackle the challenges facing the future of the built environment. We encourage you to share your teaching statement—a maximum of one page—that details how you intend to engage with pressing topics such as re-use, aesthetics, climate emergency, composition, housing shortage, tactility, parity, construction, inclusivity, space, care, and expression, among others. Additionally, please describe your teaching methodology for engaging students and preparing them to be responsible actors in the discipline of architecture.

One independent architect or architectural collective will be selected to teach a design studio with approximately 25 students on campus for two days a week as Guest Lecturers for the duration of two semesters between Fall 2027 and Spring 2029. Regular intermediate reviews and public final presentations with external guests will facilitate exchange among students and faculty, contributing to a dynamic, interdisciplinary teaching environment at the Department of Architecture.

Profile

  • Each applicant may only apply with one team.
  • The team must include at least one independently practicing architect.
  • Applicants should not have more than 2 years of teaching experience in independently leading a design studio at any other architecture faculty.
  • Weekly presence on campus is required.
  • Applicants holding a working contract with ETH during the application period will not be considered for the position.
