Job Offer: Group Leader Systems Operations

The ETH Zurich technology platform NEXUS Personalized Health drives discovery and translational research aimed at personalized health. Our expertise spans Clinical Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Software Engineering, Systems Operations, and Screening & Lab Automation.

About Systems Operations

Systems Operations is essential in bridging the gap between system development and operational reliability in real-world research and clinical contexts. Our team of five members is intentionally diverse, incorporating various roles including site reliability engineering and clinical study execution. As systems mature, our group takes on operational responsibilities that arise across NEXUS.

Your Role

As the Group Leader for Systems Operations, you will guide a diverse team and establish how NEXUS manages operations in collaboration with users and partners. You will create clarity in responsibilities, minimize friction, and ensure service delivery that fosters project success.

Key Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership: Mentor and develop a diverse team with various professional backgrounds.
  • Operational Ownership: Ensure the reliable operation of internal and partner-facing systems, including deployments and day-to-day stability.
  • Transition and Lifecycle Management: Oversee transitions from development to controlled test phases and ongoing operations, including documentation and acceptance criteria.
  • Regulated Execution: Coordinate work requiring regulatory awareness, certification constraints, and validated processes.
  • Stakeholder Management: Proactively manage expectations and resolve conflicts early to maintain alignment between technical realities and user needs.
  • Service Delivery: Prioritize and manage multiple demands through transparent intake and triage processes.
  • Reliability Practices: Establish standards for monitoring, backups, and change management; predictability and ownership are crucial.
  • Cross-Team Collaboration: Work closely with Software Engineering, Clinical Bioinformatics, and other divisions to ensure coherent project delivery.
  • Process Improvement: Simplify and standardize processes without introducing unnecessary bureaucracy.
  • Resource Management: Plan capacity and priorities across a growing range of operational commitments.

Qualifications

You will thrive in this role if:

  • You enjoy stabilizing and continuously improving systems over time.
  • You can navigate complex stakeholder environments with clarity and calm.
  • You effectively handle difficult conversations and conflicts constructively.
  • You proactively clarify ownership and define responsibilities when necessary.
  • You blend technical depth with strong interpersonal skills.
  • You prefer leadership that encompasses both people management and service outcomes.
  • You can craft operational processes that minimize friction.
  • You are comfortable working with diverse profiles from technical to non-technical roles.

Non-Negotiables

  • Demonstrated leadership experience in operations, platform engineering, or clinical operations.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, capable of aligning expectations and resolving conflicts.
  • Experience ensuring reliable operations in regulated environments.
  • Ability to effectively communicate technical details to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Excellent English communication skills.

Strongly Expected

  • Experience defining operating models and service boundaries between teams.
  • Comfort with structured documentation and requirements traceability.

Advantageous

  • Prior experience in healthcare or clinical research operations.
  • Familiarity with security-conscious deployments.
  • Knowledge of German is a plus.
