Experimental Animal Center

We are looking to fill a position starting April 1st, 2026, or by appointment. This is a 2-year contract with the possibility of extension.

Area of Responsibility

Your primary responsibility will be to supervise all genetically modified or mutant animals at the Experimental Animal Center (EAC). This role includes ensuring compliance with the legally mandated distress monitoring of GM animals in accordance with Article 124 of the Swiss Animal Welfare Ordinance and Article 12 of the Animal Experiments Ordinance, as well as supporting the animal management systems. The position reports to the Head of EAC.

The responsibilities include:

  • Advising and supporting researchers in creating nomenclature-compliant strain names and accurately completing the GM data sheets and forms.
  • Uploading completed documents and data sheets to the animal management systems (Pyrat, Animex).
  • Supervising the GM lines of the EAC with regular checks via the animal management system on the status of distress monitoring and conducting controls in the animal facilities to implement stress-reducing measures.
  • Providing support to the Facility Heads for the genetic monitoring of the lines.
  • Maintaining regular communication with the Heads of EAC, central and decentralized Animal Facilities, Animal Welfare Officer, and Cantonal Veterinary Authorities.

Requirements

  • Ideally, you hold a degree in veterinary medicine or natural sciences/biology, along with a PhD.
  • Strong knowledge of genetic modifications and breeding in experimental rodents.
  • Further training or experience in the field of animal science is preferred.
  • Experience in conducting distress monitoring is an advantage.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience with animal management programs (e.g., Pyrat, e-rats), and proficiency in Word and Excel.
  • You are a reliable, flexible team player who is well-organized and service-oriented, with a quick comprehension and meticulous working style.
  • Proficiency in both English and German is required.
