ETH Zürich, Departement für Biosysteme - June 8, 2025

Job Opportunity: Flow Cytometry Expert at ETH Zurich

ETH Zurich is a world-leading university dedicated to advancing science, engineering, and technology. The Single Cell Facility (SCF) is a central research and service platform at the Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering (D-BSSE) located in Basel. This multi-user facility provides access to an advanced portfolio of instruments for optical single-cell analysis, including light microscopy and flow cytometry technology. The SCF is integral to the D-BSSE's mission of uncovering the design principles of cells in stochastic environments and leveraging this knowledge for network design.

The SCF staff collaborates closely with the Lab Automation Facility (LAF) team, which develops and maintains complex robotic setups integrated with readout technologies, such as high-content imaging, for experimental workflows in biology and biochemistry.

The SCF's centralized instrument pool is complemented by expert services, including:

  • Instrument training
  • Hardware and software maintenance
  • Instrument operator service
  • Advice on sample preparation and assay design
  • Data analysis and management

As a member of the SCF, you will engage in flow cytometry analysis and cell sorting, instrument maintenance, and user training for a diverse range of biology and biotechnology projects. The SCF's flow cytometry instrument portfolio currently consists of seven sorters and seven analyzers, featuring advanced capabilities such as spectral and image analysis-based sorting.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Operate all aspects of flow cytometry sorters and analyzers, ensuring quality control, maintenance, and troubleshooting across a range of instruments (e.g., BD Fortessa, Melody, Aria Fusion, ARIAIII, Discover S8, BC CytoFLEX, Cytek Aurora, SONY ID 7000, MA900, SH800).
  • Prepare samples, develop panels, and conduct data analysis (both low and high parametric data).
  • Provide training, user support, and expert advice on experimental design, data analysis, and interpretation of results.
  • Organize the logistical aspects of the service schedule and participate in lab management and teaching curriculum.

Qualifications:

  • PhD in life sciences, preferably in cell biology, microbiology, genetics, or a related field.
  • Proven hands-on experience with multiple types of state-of-the-art flow cytometry; experience with spectral analysis is essential.
  • In-depth knowledge of quantitative cell analysis and high-speed cell sorting, including expertise in analyzing flow cytometry data using various software analysis tools.
  • Experience in panel design and assay validation.
  • Good knowledge of optical principles along with practical skills in hardware maintenance and tuning.
  • Previous work in a scientific flow cytometry facility is a plus.

This position demands excellent communication skills in English to interact effectively with researchers and a commitment to the service-oriented nature of the facility to support scientific research and operations at the D-BSSE. In addition to strong technical expertise in flow cytometry, you should be an excellent team player capable of adapting to a diverse working environment.

What We Offer:

  • A stimulating work environment with state-of-the-art facilities and technology at one of the world’s top universities.
  • Collaborate in an international and multidisciplinary team within a vibrant research community.
  • Competitive salary and excellent benefits in accordance with ETH Zurich guidelines.
