Flow Cytometry Expert / Flow Cytometry Expertess

ETH Zürich, Departement für Biosysteme - June 6, 2025

Join the Single Cell Facility at ETH Zurich

ETH Zurich is a world-leading university committed to advancing science, engineering, and technology. The Single Cell Facility (SCF) serves as a vital research and service platform at the Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering (D-BSSE), located in Basel. This multi-user facility provides access to an extensive portfolio of high-end instruments for optical single-cell analysis, including light microscopy and flow cytometry technology.

The SCF is integral to D-BSSE's mission to unravel the design principles of cells in stochastic environments and their application for network design. Our staff collaborates closely with the Lab Automation Facility (LAF) team, which develops and maintains intricate robotic systems integrated with readout technologies such as high-content imaging for experimental workflows in biology and biochemistry.

The centralized instrument pool at SCF is complemented by expert services provided by our dedicated staff, who offer:

  • Instrument training
  • Hardware and software maintenance
  • Instrument operator services
  • Advice on sample preparation and assay design
  • Data analysis and management

As a member of the SCF, you will perform flow cytometry analysis and cell sorting, instrument maintenance, and user training related to a variety of biology and biotechnology projects. Our flow cytometry portfolio currently includes 7 sorters and 7 analyzers, featuring high-end functionalities such as spectral and image analysis-based sorting.

Your Responsibilities

  • Oversee all aspects of flow cytometry sorter and analyzer operations, including quality control, maintenance, and troubleshooting across various instruments such as BD Fortessa, Melody, Aria Fusion, ARIA III, Discover S8, BC CytoFLEX, Cytek Aurora, and SONY ID 7000, MA900, SH800.
  • Conduct sample preparation, panel development, and data analysis for both low and high parametric data.
  • Provide training, user support, and expert advice on experimental design, data analysis, and result interpretation.
  • Organize logistical aspects of the service schedule and participate actively in lab management and teaching curriculum.

Your Qualifications

  • PhD in life sciences, preferably in cell biology, microbiology, genetics, or a related field.
  • Proven hands-on experience with various state-of-the-art flow cytometry instruments. Experience with spectral analysis is essential.
  • In-depth knowledge of quantitative cell analysis and high-speed cell sorting, including the analysis of flow cytometry data utilizing various software tools.
  • Experience in panel design and assay validation.
  • Strong understanding of optical principles and practical skills in hardware maintenance and tuning.
  • Previous experience in a scientific flow cytometry facility is a plus.

This role requires excellent communication skills in English to effectively engage with researchers and a commitment to supporting the scientific research and operational needs of the D-BSSE. In addition to exceptional technical expertise in flow cytometry, you must thrive in a collaborative and diverse work environment.

Why Join Us?

  • A stimulating work environment with state-of-the-art facilities and technology at one of the world’s top universities.
  • Engage with an international and multidisciplinary team embedded within a vibrant research community.
  • Enjoy competitive salary and excellent benefits following ETH Zurich guidelines.
