Established in 2003 in Basel, Switzerland, the Institute collaborates with partners globally to enhance knowledge, practices, and policies on anti-corruption, asset recovery, and business integrity. With field operations worldwide, we employ approximately 150 staff members from 32 nationalities. The Basel Institute is an Associated Institute of the University of Basel.

Job Description

We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Specialist, Finance (Accountant) who possesses a solid understanding of key accounting and financial management principles, including project financing and budgeting. The post holder will be responsible for day-to-day accounting and related financial administrative tasks.

The ideal candidate is a proactive, communicative team player who values meaningful work, is capable of efficiently managing multiple tasks while maintaining accuracy, is receptive to feedback, and is eager to learn. This position is part of the finance team at the Basel Institute headquarters and reports to the Senior Specialist / Team Lead, Finance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Administer accounts receivables and payables by reviewing, processing, documenting, executing, and filing transactions.
  • Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, and flight statements received from travel agencies.
  • Manage open debtor reports.
  • Perform other financial administrative duties as assigned to ensure effective day-to-day business operations.
  • Proactively communicate with Institute staff as necessary to effectively accomplish expected tasks.
  • Handle sensitive or confidential information with integrity and discretion.

The role may be expanded to include additional responsibilities based on the candidate's availability, capabilities, and professional interest in on-the-job learning.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Undergraduate or technical college degree in accounting, finance, business, or a related field, combined with a professional qualification in accounting or finance.
  • 1 to 2 years of relevant job experience; experience in an internationally operating non-profit or humanitarian organization is an advantage.
  • Strong financial acumen, including knowledge of financial controls and processes.
  • Experience with bookkeeping software (ideally Infoniqa ONE 50 and Dynamics 365 Business Central).
  • Proficient in MS Excel at an expert/advanced level and competent in MS Word.
  • Excellent organizational and planning abilities; detail-oriented with a high level of efficiency and accuracy.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively and diplomatically across functions.
  • Strong work ethic, self-motivated, capable of identifying, analyzing, communicating, and solving problems independently.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Flexibility and willingness to work additional hours during peak periods.
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken) and proficiency in German.
