The Basel Institute on Governance is a hands-on centre of competence dedicated to promoting good governance and countering corruption for a more peaceful, just, and sustainable world. Established in 2003 in Basel, Switzerland, the Institute collaborates with partners worldwide to advance knowledge, practice, and policy on anti-corruption, asset recovery, and business integrity. With field operations across the globe, it employs around 150 staff from 32 different nationalities and is an Associated Institute of the University of Basel.

Job Description

We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Specialist in Finance (Accountant) who possesses a strong understanding of key accounting and financial management principles, especially in project financing and budgeting. The successful candidate will be responsible for day-to-day accounting and related financial administrative tasks.

The ideal candidate is a proactive and communicative team player, eager for a meaningful job, capable of multitasking while maintaining efficiency and accuracy. Being open to feedback and keen on learning is essential. The post holder will join the finance team at the Basel Institute’s headquarters and report to the Senior Specialist / Team Lead, Finance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Administer accounts receivables and accounts payables, including reviewing, processing, documenting, executing, and filing transactions.
  • Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, and flight statements received from travel agencies.
  • Manage open debtor reports.
  • Cary out other financial administrative duties as assigned to ensure the effective running of daily business operations.
  • Proactively communicate with Institute staff as necessary to effectively execute expected tasks.
  • Handle sensitive or confidential information with honesty and integrity.

The role may evolve to encompass additional responsibilities based on the post holder’s capabilities and professional interests.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Undergraduate degree, technical college degree, or commercial training in accounting, finance, or business, with a professional qualification in accounting or finance preferred.
  • A minimum of one to two years of relevant job experience; experience in an internationally operating non-profit development or humanitarian aid organization is an advantage.
  • Strong financial understanding and knowledge of financial controls and processes.
  • Experience with bookkeeping software (ideally Infoniqa ONE 50 and Dynamics 365 Business Central).
  • Expert/advanced proficiency in MS Excel and proficiency in MS Word.
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills; detail-oriented and efficient.
  • Strong ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically across functions.
  • Proactive work ethic; self-starter capable of identifying, analyzing, communicating, and solving problems swiftly.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Flexibility and willingness to work additional hours during peak periods.
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken) and proficiency in German.
