If you are looking to be part of a united team where everyone is empowered and trusted to make a meaningful impact, Magic Leap could be your ideal place. Here, you will have the opportunity to explore innovative solutions and leverage your talents to address real-world problems. Working alongside industry experts, you can enhance your skills while contributing to making our technology accessible to millions as a vital partner in the mixed reality (XR) ecosystem. We believe that successful change and progress stem from diverse perspectives. As we shape our future, every voice matters. Together, we can reimagine the world of work and, alongside our bold partners, make the impossible possible.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a manager to lead an engineering team of four within the Perception group. You will be responsible for managing the systems that collect essential real-world sensor data, including ground truth, from our XR devices. This data is crucial for the development and validation of various perception features, such as head tracking, eye tracking, depth estimation, and object tracking. You will bridge the gap between leadership and hands-on technical contribution by defining technical strategy, setting project roadmaps with internal stakeholders, architecting data collection tooling, and writing production code, all while building and mentoring a cross-disciplinary engineering team. Additionally, you will oversee two data collection labs equipped with technologies such as OptiTrack, LiDARs, and robotic arms located in different geographic regions.

This position requires a seasoned, versatile engineer who can operate autonomously, create opportunities, balance strategic planning with tactical execution, and foster talent while driving technical excellence.

Important: You will be leading a distributed team across Europe and the US, so flexibility in working across multiple time zones is essential. This is a hybrid role, though it requires close proximity to our Zurich office. Occasional travel may be necessary.

What You’ll Do

  • Serve as the primary technical point of contact for internal clients, proactively aligning data delivery roadmaps with business needs.
  • Design, develop, and maintain hardware and software solutions for ground truth data collection in collaboration with cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Individually develop and maintain production software in Python and C++ as the lead developer.
  • Maintain strategic oversight of vendor landscape for hardware and software tooling, evaluating and selecting optimal solutions.
  • Orchestrate data collection operations with internal teams and external data collectors.
  • Set technical direction and priorities for a cross-disciplinary computer vision team.
  • Mentor and coach team members with technical depth and empathy, supporting their professional growth and career development.

The Experience You Bring

  • Bachelor's / Master’s degree in Computer Science, Robotics, or equivalent experience.
  • 7+ years of professional software development experience in Python and C++.
  • 3+ years of experience in geometric computer vision.
  • 3+ years of technical leadership experience managing and mentoring engineering teams.
  • Proven track record in system architecture involving hardware and software.
  • Proven ability to manage cross-functional projects with multiple stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate autonomously in ambiguous environments.

It’s Exciting If You Also Have

  • Experience with camera calibration, bundle adjustment, and hand-eye calibration techniques.
  • Hands-on experience with OptiTrack or similar motion capture systems.
  • Background in XR/AR/VR development.
  • Experience integrating and calibrating Lidar sensors.
  • Strong rapid prototyping skills for hardware and software systems.
