Earth Systems Data Manager Position at C2SM - ETH Zurich

The Center for Climate Systems Modeling (C2SM) at ETH Zurich is a collaborative, interdisciplinary entity that connects ETH Zurich with partner institutions. Our mission is to provide a cutting-edge technology and networking platform that supports the development and application of Earth system, weather, and climate modeling, alongside data infrastructure and impact research. The successful candidate will work closely with the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (CSCS).

With the increasing volume and diversity of Earth observations from satellites, airborne instruments, and in-situ measurement networks, effectively utilizing this data is critical for enhancing our understanding of the Earth system.

To tackle this challenge, we are developing a robust data management framework aimed at making rapidly growing Earth-system datasets accessible and valuable to the scientific community. The Earth Systems Data Manager will be instrumental in shaping this framework by:

  • Identifying and evaluating Earth system observations relevant to interdisciplinary research needs.
  • Curating data collections by assessing their quality, completeness, and scientific value.
  • Creating comprehensive metadata and documentation to support data discovery and usage.
  • Developing a web-based platform to provide users with an overview of the available data.
  • Coordinating with researchers in climate science, environmental monitoring, data science, and related fields.
  • Collaborating with a dynamic and international team of researchers and developers to operate and enhance the research platform.
  • Supporting interdisciplinary research projects that require multiple data sources.
  • Leveraging high-performance computing platforms for data storage and analysis.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Earth sciences, data science, computer science, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of satellite data formats and remote sensing.
  • Experience with large datasets (petabyte-scale), data management, and data quality control.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, or Julia, along with expertise in scientific data libraries (e.g., xarray, netCDF4, HDF5, Zarr) and workflow automation on HPC systems.
  • Strong communication skills to facilitate collaboration across diverse scientific disciplines.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience in interdisciplinary environments.
  • PhD in remote sensing or a related field.
  • Experience leading projects that span various domains.
  • Background in user support, data documentation, and familiarity with FAIR data principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable).

This role places you at the forefront of Earth system modeling, high-performance computing, and data-driven science. At C2SM, you will become part of a vibrant and interdisciplinary community that connects leading researchers in weather and climate, computational scientists, and data experts from ETH Zurich and its partner institutions. We offer an intellectually stimulating environment that allows you to closely engage with prominent groups in Earth system science and collaborate with the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (CSCS).

This position presents a unique opportunity to shape modern data infrastructure for the Swiss climate and weather research community, contribute to significant scientific projects, and support researchers working with rapidly expanding environmental datasets. You will have access to outstanding technical resources, cutting-edge HPC systems, mentorship, and professional development in a collaborative and forward-thinking research ecosystem.

The position is initially limited to two years, although there is a possibility for extension.
