Doctoral Candidate for Broadband Packaging of SiC Optical Frequency Combs (Male/Female)

Swiss PIC AG - March 1, 2026

Join Our Team as a Doctoral Candidate

Swiss PIC offers an exciting opportunity for motivated students to join our team as a doctoral candidate. This position is part of the "Silicon Carbide Photonic Integrated Circuit (SiCPIC)" project, a prestigious European Doctoral Network initiative funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action (MSCA), Grant Agreement No. 101227010.

Project Context

The SiCPIC project aims to develop next-generation PIC technologies by unlocking the unique optical properties of Silicon Carbide (SiC). One noteworthy example is the SiC-based optical frequency comb (OFC) characterized by a low pumping threshold power, high energy efficiency, and a broad wavelength coverage range. The PhD candidate will join an international team of 15 doctoral students, collaborating with 13 leading academic and industrial partners from Switzerland, Germany, France, Italy, and Denmark to tackle technological challenges preventing chip-scale OFC.

Tasks

The PhD project is focused on the convergence of individual OFC components and their assembly into a functional module. The packaging and application of mid-infrared OFC light sources has yet to be demonstrated, and the goal is to create a compact mid-infrared source with extensive wavelength coverage that has the potential to revolutionize spectroscopy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and Simulation: Develop and optimize low-loss coupling that supports broadband mid-IR light.
  • Characterization: Carry out optical and electrical characterization of both the OFC chip and pump laser. Involvement in the processing of photonic devices in the cleanroom may also be required.
  • Technology Evaluation: Analyze alternative integration strategies and identify areas for improvement. Implement iterative design and process refinements to enhance efficiency and reliability.
  • System-Level Performance Analysis: Assess the impact of the photonic package on overall performance.

Requirements

We are looking for candidates who are passionate about photonics and emerging technologies, with a strong interest in integrated photonics. Applicants should possess excellent communication skills in English and demonstrate a strong willingness to learn, along with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively. Candidates must hold a two-year master's degree or an equivalent qualification in photonics, electronics, applied physics, or a related field.

Benefits

Joining Swiss PIC means becoming part of a dynamic, international team located on the campus of the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in Villigen, Switzerland – the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences in the country. Our environment offers state-of-the-art facilities, advanced optical labs, and a collaborative atmosphere with leading experts in photonics, computing, materials science, and quantum technologies. You will also be a member of a vibrant community of PhD students at PSI, which organizes numerous social events.

The position includes two secondments of three months each, planned at DTU (Denmark) and Neoplas (Germany). The candidate will also engage in common meetings with the other 14 PhD students in the network, including three dedicated training schools. Academic enrollment will be at the Politecnico of Torino, necessitating occasional visits to Torino for courses and supervisor meetings during the employment period.

Diversity

Swiss PIC is committed to fostering diversity in the workplace. We offer an open, multicultural environment and flexible working arrangements that enable individuals of all genders to achieve a desirable balance between professional and personal development. We encourage applications from candidates of all ages, genders, races, disabilities, religions, and ethnic backgrounds. Our recruitment process adheres to the European Code of Conduct for Recruitment of Researchers, which all candidates are encouraged to familiarize themselves with.
