Summary

Discovery Postdoctoral Fellow in Cancer Functional Genomics

About the Role

We are excited to announce the opening of applications for our Discovery Fellowship track of the Novartis Postdoctoral Fellowship Program. Join Novartis Biomedical Research as a Discovery Postdoctoral Fellow and be a part of our Oncology Drug Discovery (ODD) group in Basel, Switzerland.

In this role, you will engage in a project focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms that govern the activity of specific lineage-specific transcription factors and their selective oncogenic functions. Utilizing state-of-the-art gene editing and functional genomics techniques, you will explore the structure-function relationships of these oncogenes, investigate their differential regulation of transcription, and study their responsiveness to external stimuli in cancer contexts. Your work will contribute to elucidating the mechanisms of resistance that may develop following pharmacological treatment.

As a participant in the Discovery Fellowship track, you will join a dynamic and dedicated community of postdoctoral researchers, participating in monthly seminars and other community events. You will be surrounded by a supportive cohort of fellow scientists who will aid in accelerating your scientific growth while enhancing your professional skill set. Opportunities include a Postdoc Practicum in another laboratory or a business function within Novartis. This applied research program spans a maximum of three years, with the possibility of a one-year extension.

Discovery Postdoctoral Fellows have the unique opportunity to conduct innovative, interdisciplinary research and are expected to publish in leading scientific journals. We emphasize collaboration across scientific and organizational boundaries, focusing on pioneering technologies that hold potential for transformative therapeutic breakthroughs.

Through the Novartis Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, you will grow as a drug hunter and a scientific leader. Join a professional network that supports your development as a research scientist and take the opportunity to address pressing health challenges by reimagining medicine together.

Preferred start date: October 1st, 2025

Location: Campus Basel, Switzerland

  • Work independently and collaboratively within interdisciplinary teams, maintain organized documentation, and actively engage in laboratory activities.
  • Design, execute, analyze, and evaluate experiments across various in vitro and ex vivo assays.
  • Conduct literature research, implement novel technologies, and present findings to both your team and the broader scientific community.
  • Engage in presentations at internal meetings, international conferences, and publish in top-tier scientific journals.

Role Requirements

  • PhD in molecular biology, cancer biology, biochemistry, or a related field.
  • PhD students in their final year of thesis work are welcome to apply.
  • Applicants must have received their PhD no more than two years before the application date (PhD degrees must have been awarded May 2023 or later).
  • Knowledge of gene regulation, chromatin, and transcription factor biology, especially within cancer research.
  • Demonstrated experience with molecular biology techniques, gene editing (e.g., knock-in/out, base editing), and genome-wide genomics methodologies (e.g., ChIP-seq, ATAC-seq).
  • Proficiency in large-scale functional genomics screening (e.g., CRISPR screen, Perturb-seq, deep mutational scanning).
  • Bioinformatics skills are a plus.
  • Strong publication record or other scientific achievements (e.g., awards, patents, grants).
  • Excellent analytical, communication, presentation, and organizational abilities.
  • A passion for fundamental exploratory research and a boundless curiosity.
