Context & Mission

The MSF OCG Deputy Medical Director (DMD) is responsible for coordinating the Department’s work towards operations and ensuring the coherence and pertinence of the technical support provided by the Department to the field. The DMD will supervise Medical Leaders, collaborate closely with polyvalent medical referents (RMPs) and Medical Officers, and monitor the needs of the medical operation projects. Additionally, the DMD will oversee specific transversal projects that will enhance the care we deliver to patients and communities.

Tasks & Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the Department’s work towards operations, ensuring coherence and relevance of strategic and technical support to the field.
  • Provide strong technical supervision of RMP and ensure smooth coordination with various cells.
  • Guide medical strategic and technical support towards field challenges and needs in a coherent and timely manner.
  • Oversee the implementation of medico-operational policies and related strategic and technical packages.
  • Engage in discussions and debates during key medico-operational coordination meetings, training, and strategic discussions with Operations.
  • Collaborate on advocacy and positioning work with the Deputy Operations Director and the Advocacy & Communication team.
  • Support Project Managers handling transversal health and medical projects and participate in Steering Committees of related departmental projects.
  • Coordinate the capitalization of health and medical operational strategies for high-level advocacy initiatives.
  • Coordinate the Annual Medical Report and contribute to the OCG Annual Report and Mutual Accountability Report.
  • Engage with other middle managers at HQ OCG regarding shared institutional objectives.
  • Participate in the career development of medical field staff, validating training requests and educational pursuits.
  • Conduct briefings and debriefings of field managers (MedCos and Medical Team Leaders) to ensure future medico-operational activities are informed by field experiences.
  • By delegation from the Medical Director, the DMD may be responsible for various transversal issues and additional dossiers as required.

Your Profile

Education

  • Medical or Paramedical qualification.
  • Specialization in Tropical Medicine, Epidemiology, or Public Health is a plus.

Experience

  • Field and/or HQ experience with MSF or another medical humanitarian organization, preferably in a country coordination position such as HoM or Medical Coordinator.
  • Proven expertise in medical leadership, advocacy efforts, and field documentation.
  • Desirable experience in operational research in low-resource settings and engagement with external research institutions.

Languages

  • Fluency in English and French is required (oral and written).
  • Knowledge of Spanish or Arabic is a plus.

Skills/Technical Competencies

  • Strong understanding of humanitarian medicine, medico-operational frameworks, and MSF policies.
  • Expertise in healthcare leadership, innovation, and organizational change management.
  • Experience in medical research, evidence-based policymaking, and cross-sectional collaboration.
  • Familiarity with international public health policies and epidemic response strategies is desired.

Personal Abilities/Qualities

  • Collaborative team management style and active listening skills.
  • Strong negotiation, representation, and advocacy skills for engaging with internal and external health partners.
  • Capacity to drive institutional change and foster collaboration between medical, operational, and advocacy units.

Terms of Employment

  • Full-time position (100%, 40 hours/week).
  • Open-ended contract.
  • Working location: Geneva, Switzerland.
  • Estimated start date: October 1, 2025.
  • Gross annual salary (for 100%): CHF 131,484 to CHF 147,000 (salary commensurate with experience and internal salary grid).
  • Paid vacation: 25 days per year, prorata temporis, plus applicable Swiss public holidays.
  • Pension plan: pension contribution covered 3/4 by MSF, 1/4 by the employee.
  • Relocation package available for those moving from abroad to Switzerland.
