Internship - Data Science / Software Engineer

The Global Health Engineering group is part of the D-MAVT (Mechanical Engineering) department at ETH Zurich. Our multidisciplinary team of mechanical engineers, environmental engineers, economists, and social scientists focuses on addressing challenges in resource-constrained countries.

Project Background

As part of our Open Science team, you will support the development of efficient data cleaning and extraction processes, user-friendly visualizations, and curated data publications.

Job Description

Your contributions will facilitate ongoing projects, including:

  • Updating raw data extraction for scientific publications.
  • Extracting data from PDF documents to compile metadata for projects funded under the ETH Board Open Research Data (ORD) program.
  • Contributing to data packages produced by the openwashdata community.
  • Assisting in the creation of R data publication packages such as washr and fairenough.

Profile

  • You are passionate about concise and reusable data and code.
  • You are proficient with common data science tools, including Git, GitHub, R, Python, RStudio IDE, and VS Code.
  • You are familiar with the R Tidyverse packages and have proven skills in problem-solving as illustrated in "R for Data Science."
  • You keep abreast of the latest technical developments in Large Language Models (LLMs) and their applications in academia.

Requirements

  • You hold a BSc degree.
  • You possess a valid work permit for Switzerland. Please indicate your work permit status (e.g., Swiss passport, work permit).

Workplace

Our office in Zurich offers a conducive environment, with the option for occasional remote work. Employment conditions adhere to university guidelines, which include five weeks of vacation, numerous training opportunities, and a competitive salary of 3000 CHF per month.
