The ETH Library (www.library.ethz.ch) is dedicated to promoting knowledge and supporting research and teaching, making the complexities of the past, present, and future comprehensible. We are seeking a Data Scientist with Software Engineering and AI Expertise to join our Research Analytics Service group, part of the Research Support Services and Acquisitions section. This position will commence on 1 November 2025.

Your Role and Responsibilities

As a member of the Research Analytics Services group, you will:

  • Conduct scientometric analyses and provide consulting to researchers, departments, controlling, and the executive board of ETH Zurich.
  • Actively participate in the implementation of diverse projects in the field of scientometrics.
  • Design and develop bibliometric services, optimizing new workflows in collaboration with other ETH Zurich units, particularly the Institutional Research team.
  • Contribute to innovative approaches, especially in open data.
  • Conduct in-depth technical analyses of files and formats ingested into the ETH Data Archive, providing risk assessments and actionable recommendations.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you should possess the following qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree in data science, computer science, or social sciences; a PhD/doctorate in a related field is advantageous.
  • Solid skills in Python and R, with a focus on writing clear, reproducible, and well-structured code.
  • A basic understanding of SQL and/or NoSQL databases, with a willingness to deepen this knowledge.
  • Expertise in software or data engineering, coupled with a strong interest in artificial intelligence.
  • Experience or eagerness to learn about research assessment methods.
  • A keen interest in the Swiss research landscape, scholarly communication, and methods of research evaluation.
  • A systematic and detail-oriented work ethic with strong analytical thinking skills.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and spoken, in English and German.
