Organisation Overview

International Blue Cross (IBC) is a politically and denominationally independent non-governmental umbrella organization that unites 37 national Christian value-based organizations across Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America. IBC and its members are dedicated to serving some of the most excluded and vulnerable populations worldwide. Specializing in addressing issues related to alcohol and other drugs, IBC implements prevention, treatment, and aftercare programs.

In addition to executing international development and cooperation initiatives, IBC engages in alcohol policy advocacy and holds consultative status at the UN ECOSOC. The international team coordinates projects and offers guidance to our national partner organizations globally in project implementation and financing. IBC is ZEWO certified and is a member of the Community of Cooperation KoGe and INTERACTION.

Job Description

As a Communication and Fundraising Assistant, you will be based in Bern and responsible for supporting the multi-national secretariat team with various tasks crucial to the smooth operation of the Bern office. Your responsibilities will include:

Communications and Fundraising Work

  • Facilitate fundraising initiatives for International Blue Cross within churches.
  • Assist with fundraising and project processes in collaboration with other staff members and volunteers.
  • Contribute to content creation for social media and the website, focusing on impactful storytelling from the field.
  • Draft and develop project documentation, fundraising materials, and public relations content such as project descriptions, annual reports, and donation letters.
  • Facilitate an online youth forum approximately every 3-4 months.
  • Manage verbal communication, including answering telephone inquiries and reaching out to prospective donors.
  • Support written communication by assisting the team in drafting texts for newsletters, project reports, and donor communication.
  • Provide support to Programme Officers on project reporting and communication efforts.

Administrative Support

  • Assist the Finance Officer with financial record keeping.
  • Support the Administrator in organizing travel for international meetings.
  • Handle correspondence, maintain address lists, and manage mailings.
  • Provide secretarial assistance, including translations and office material management.

Representation

  • Occasionally represent IBC in meetings with churches and other donors as appropriate.
  • Support the secretariat team in collaborating with institutional partners to identify new funding opportunities.
  • Participate in occasional international travel (maximum of 3-5 travel days per year, as agreed upon).

Other

  • Perform any additional tasks as required to ensure the smooth operation of IBC.

Job Requirements

  • Fluency in German, with strong proficiency in English and basic knowledge of French; additional languages are a plus.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word) and online communication; knowledge of InDesign is an advantage.
  • Exceptional communication, social, and networking skills.
  • Honest, trustworthy, precise, and organized.

  • Motivated to work in an environment focused on capacity building for partners supporting vulnerable populations and addressing alcohol and drug issues.
  • Team spirit, commitment, and flexibility are essential.

  • Must possess a valid permit to work in Switzerland (no sponsorship needed).
  • This is a junior position suitable for Bachelor and Master students specializing in social sciences, communication, development cooperation, and related fields.
