Clinical Veterinarian for Laboratory Animals

The Central Animal Facility is the largest facility of the Experimental Animal Center (EAC) at the University of Bern in Switzerland. Our primary mission is to breed and house small rodents and rabbits while providing the necessary infrastructure for conducting animal experiments as part of the University’s biomedical research program. Adhering to the principles of the 3Rs (Reduce, Refine, Replace), fostering a "Culture of Care," and ensuring compliance with guidelines and regulations are cornerstones of our strategy.

Areas of Responsibility

Clinical Veterinary Medicine

  • Deliver veterinary medical care independently.
  • Implement preventive medicine programs, including routine health monitoring, import, quarantine, and diagnostics.
  • Participate in the veterinary on-call schedule.

Compliance

  • Ensure adherence to university guidelines and Swiss regulations.
  • Develop, review, and revise clinical-related SOPs.
  • Support the EAC veterinary pharmacy.
  • Audit veterinary medical records and other clinically related documents.
  • Serve as a rotating member in internal facility/programmatic evaluations.
  • Assist in creating datasheets for GM animals and in distress monitoring.

Scientific Support

  • Provide advice and support for researchers on clinical issues, animal models, and breeding strategies.
  • Participate in internal training for researchers and animal care staff.
  • Support researchers with the animal administration database (PyRAT).

Requirements

  • Degree in veterinary medicine eligible to work in Switzerland.
  • ECLAM / ACLAM board certification is a desired plus.
  • At least 3 years of working experience in laboratory animal medicine required.
  • Practical experience in embryo/breeding techniques is desirable.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Initiative, goal-oriented, with strong organizational skills; ambitious and stress-resistant.
  • Fluent in English and/or German, with proficiency in other languages considered an asset.
