The Central Animal Facility is the largest component of the Experimental Animal Center (EAC) at the University of Bern, Switzerland. Our primary mission is to breed and house small rodents and rabbits, providing essential infrastructure for conducting animal experiments that advance the biomedical research program at our university. We uphold the principles of the 3Rs (Reduce, Refine, Replace), a "Culture of Care," and strict adherence to guidelines and regulations, which are fundamental to our operational strategy.
Position Available: Clinical Veterinarian for Laboratory Animals
Areas of Responsibility
Clinical Veterinary Medicine
Independently provide veterinary medical care.
Implement preventive medicine programs, including routine health monitoring, import, quarantine, and diagnostics.
Participate in the veterinary on-call schedule.
Compliance
Ensure regulatory compliance with university guidelines and Swiss regulations.
Develop, review, and revise clinical-related Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Support the EAC veterinary pharmacy.
Conduct audits of veterinary medical records and other clinically relevant documents.
Serve as a rotating member in internal facility and programmatic evaluations.
Assist with creating datasheets for genetically modified animals and distress monitoring.
Scientific Support
Provide advice and support to researchers on clinical issues, animal models, and breeding strategies.
Participate in internal training for researchers and animal care staff.
Assist researchers in utilizing the animal administration database (PyRAT).
Requirements
Degree in veterinary medicine eligible for practice in Switzerland.
ECLAM / ACLAM board certification is a desirable advantage.
Minimum of 3 years of experience in laboratory animal medicine required.
Practical experience in embryo breeding techniques is preferred.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Self-motivated, goal-oriented, with strong organizational abilities; ability to thrive under stress.
Fluency in English and/or German; proficiency in other languages is a plus.
