The Central Animal Facility is the largest facility of the Experimental Animal Center (EAC) at the University of Bern, Switzerland. Our primary function is to breed and house small rodents and rabbits, providing essential infrastructure for animal experiments within the biomedical research program at the University. We prioritize the principles of the 3Rs (Reduce, Refine, Replace), foster a "Culture of Care," and adhere strictly to established guidelines and regulations as the cornerstones of our strategy. We are currently seeking to fill the role of Clinical Veterinarian for Laboratory Animals, either immediately or by mutual agreement.
Areas of Responsibility
Clinical Veterinary Medicine:
Provide independent veterinary medical care.
Implement preventive medicine programs, including routine health monitoring, import protocols, quarantine measures, and diagnostics.
Participate in the veterinary on-call schedule.
Compliance:
Ensure adherence to university guidelines and Swiss regulations.
Develop, review, and revise clinical-related Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Support the EAC veterinary pharmacy.
Audit veterinary medical records and other clinically related documents.
Contribute as a rotating member in internal facility and programmatic evaluations.
Assist in creating datasheets for genetically modified animals and monitoring distress.
Scientific Support:
Provide advisory support for researchers on clinical issues, animal models, and breeding strategies.
Participate in internal training programs for researchers and animal care staff.
Assist researchers with the animal administration database (PyRAT).
Requirements
Degree in veterinary medicine, eligible for practice in Switzerland.
ECLAM / ACLAM board certification is a preferred advantage.
A minimum of 3 years of experience in laboratory animal medicine is required.
Practical experience in embryo and breeding techniques is desirable.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Proactive, goal-oriented, and highly organized; capable of handling stress effectively.
Fluency in English and/or German; additional languages are a plus.
