The Computing System Lab at the Zurich Research Center is a prestigious hub for research and development in advanced computing systems. We focus on areas such as chip architecture, computing clusters, system and interconnect, memory subsystems, artificial intelligence, and software technologies. With a dynamic team of over 70 researchers, including 50+ PhD holders, we operate at the forefront of computational innovation and play a pivotal role in shaping the future of technology.

In addition to remarkable research output, the Computing System Lab collaborates with leading industry partners and academic institutions worldwide. Chief Scientist (m/f/d)

We are seeking a high-caliber Chief Scientist to lead our initiatives in the innovation of advanced techniques and cutting-edge research, ensuring the successful operation of projects in our lab. This role involves guiding a talented team from diverse backgrounds to explore next-generation computing architectures, design comprehensive computing frameworks, and develop critical advanced techniques focusing on efficiency, scalability, resilience, and cost-effectiveness for emerging AI workloads.

The ideal candidate will possess a strong academic influence, scientific and technical proficiency, excellent communication and collaboration skills, and robust leadership abilities to keep the team at the forefront of research.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the team in identifying the evolution path of next-generation computing architectures, continuously tracking global technology trends.
  • Guide the development of outstanding architecture design and performance analysis capabilities, incorporating rapid workload modeling and computational mapping on specific hardware architectures.
  • Encourage the exploration of technical paths that differ from existing solutions, ensuring our architectures excel in efficiency, scalability, and adaptability.
  • Serve as the spokesperson for the team, articulating technical viewpoints at internal/external exchanges, technical meetings, industry conferences, and academic seminars.
  • Develop partnerships with academic institutions and industry partners to enhance knowledge exchange and research collaboration.
  • Ensure the team produces high-quality research findings and drives significant technological breakthroughs, influential publications, and valuable patents.

Requirements

  • PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, with a strong interest and proven experience in advanced computing architecture, particularly for AI scenarios.
  • Over 15 years of experience in research and development in computing architecture, including substantial leadership experience.
  • Extensive experience with AI technologies, especially in LLM, foundation model, multimodal, and various computing applications.
  • Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals and conferences with an h-index no less than 30.
  • Exceptional leadership, organizational skills, and the ability to inspire a high-performing team.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills to interact effectively with stakeholders at all levels.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in exploration and design of advanced microarchitecture, SoC, hardware platforms, and memory.
  • Proficiency in workload analysis and software-hardware co-design.
  • Knowledge of key topics in chip design and manufacturing processes.
