Join Our Team at ETH Student Project House

Become a part of the dynamic team at ETH Student Project House and contribute your woodworking expertise to help students bring their innovative ideas to life through hands-on prototyping.

About ETH Student Project House

At the ETH Student Project House (SPH), we inspire and empower students to adopt a makers and innovators mindset. By exploring their ideas and developing their own projects, students gain valuable hands-on experience and learn essential skills for their future. Our ecosystem encourages Bachelor, Master, and Doctoral students to ideate, build prototypes, test, and refine them.

Your Role

As our projects evolve and we create more prototypes, we are looking for a woodworker to join our Makerspace team. You'll work in one of the most inspiring environments at ETH Zurich, surrounded by cutting-edge tools, vibrant furnishings, and an exciting collaborative atmosphere.

We are located at two campuses: ETH Hönggerberg and ETH Centre. Working in an open space alongside our project teams, you will engage with individuals from diverse backgrounds and study disciplines, all in English. Since our projects are extracurricular, many of our events and training sessions occur in the late afternoon, evening, and occasionally on weekends.

This is an 80-100% position with an initial 1-year contract, which has the potential for extension. As a member of the Makerspace team, comprising five talented individuals, you will be tasked with the following:

Responsibilities

  • Machines: Operate, maintain, organize, and clean our woodworking area and machines, including band saws, mitre saws, belt sanders, Shaper Origin, and more.
  • Introductions, Supervision, and Safety: Introduce students to woodworking tools and machines, supervise their use, and ensure their safety.
  • Coaching: Support early-stage student projects with your technical expertise.
  • Workshops: Co-facilitate and then lead workshops in the woodworking area, contributing ideas on how to extend our offerings with your expertise.
  • Design and Make: Assist in designing and building custom infrastructure and furniture to enhance our space.

Qualifications

  • Completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter or woodworker (Schreiner:in) and hold a Swiss Federal Certificate of Competence (EFZ).
  • Strong affinity for tools, machinery, and hands-on work.
  • Confidence in enforcing safety regulations and taking responsibility for student safety.
  • A passion for realizing personal projects and learning from the experience, including failures.
  • Enjoy working with students, supporting their growth, and adapting to their needs.
  • Comfortable speaking in front of groups and leading workshops.
  • Fluency in English (C1) and proficiency in German (B2 or higher), both spoken and written.
  • Familiarity with modern communication tools and standard workshop infrastructure.

Your Impact

Join ETH Zurich and become a part of an institution that not only supports your professional development but also actively drives positive change in society. We are committed to a sustainable and climate-neutral university and offer a variety of benefits, including public transport season tickets, car sharing, a wide range of sports through ASVZ, childcare options, and attractive pension benefits.
