The ETH Zurich core facility NEXUS Personalized Health empowers discovery and translational research for personalized health. The mission of the Biostatistics Group at NEXUS is to provide expertise in statistics and computational biology to advance biomedical research and clinical applications.

Job Opening: Biostatistician

We are in search of a Biostatistician to join our international and multidisciplinary team in Zurich, either immediately or by mutual agreement.

About the Position

You will primarily be responsible for project-tailored statistical analyses and result reporting of various multi-omics data types, including, but not limited to, whole transcriptome bulk, single-cell, and spatial data. Our projects typically take place in a biomedical research or clinical diagnostics setting, with scopes ranging from basic differential expression analyses to comprehensive clinical studies. NEXUS collaborates with various academic institutions, hospitals, and companies, requiring effective communication with a diverse array of stakeholders.

Your Responsibilities

  • Provide expert support in statistical data analysis for clients in personalized health and translational research, including inference with generalized linear models, Cox regression, and probabilistic outcome prediction.
  • Support clients in statistical considerations regarding sample size and experimental design.
  • Participate in evaluating and implementing new methods to enhance existing pipelines.
  • Develop, utilize, and disseminate software tools compliant with the reproducible research paradigm (markdown, git, containerization).

Your Qualifications

  • A PhD in biostatistics or a quantitative science, or equivalent level of experience (e.g., MSc plus relevant work experience).
  • Broad and deep expertise in applied biostatistics, including modern methods for inference, prediction, and dimension reduction.
  • Strong programming skills in R.
  • Hands-on experience analyzing biological or medical data during a master’s, PhD thesis, or equivalent work.
  • Enthusiasm for computational biology and translational research, especially involving multi-modal molecular data.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, enabling effective teamwork within cross-functional groups.
  • Fluency in English, both written and verbal.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience analyzing spatial data, time-to-event data, high-dimensional data, machine learning, or AI.
  • Experience in NGS bioinformatics within a Unix-based HPC environment.
  • Familiarity with workflow management systems.
  • Knowledge of German.
