Bioinformatician for NGS Applications including Long Reads

The Functional Genomics Center Zurich (FGCZ) is excited to announce an opening for a bioinformatician focused on Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) services, particularly with long-read applications.

Project Background

The FGCZ is a collaborative core facility of ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich dedicated to utilizing the latest omics technologies in biomolecular research and personalized medicine. Our Genome Informatics group provides essential support to researchers in processing, analyzing, and interpreting NGS data. We cater to diverse applications, including metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, de novo sequencing, epigenetics, as well as single-cell and spatial applications. Our team excels in raw data processing, high-performance computing, statistical evaluation, interpretation, and integrated analysis, all within a robust open-source software environment.

Job Description

We are looking for a skilled bioinformatician who is proficient in NGS data analysis and possesses strong programming capabilities. A PhD degree in Bioinformatics, Statistics, Computer Science, or a related field is required. The ideal candidate will be communicative, team-oriented, and passionate about statistical and bioinformatics analyses related to NGS and other omics fields. A service-oriented mindset and the ability to adapt to ongoing developments in bioinformatics are essential. Proficiency in English is crucial as it is the primary working language. Experience with the Linux operating system and script-based NGS data analysis is required, while familiarity with third-generation long-read bioinformatics (PacBio or Oxford Nanopore) and a strong understanding of sequence analysis principles will be highly advantageous.

As part of the FGCZ Genome Informatics group, the candidate will conduct bioinformatics analysis for the ETH and UZH research communities and contribute to the development and maintenance of the bioinformatics infrastructure at FGCZ. This position is currently fixed-term, with potential for permanent employment.

Profile

  • PhD degree in bioinformatics or a related field
  • Proficiency in NGS data analysis with excellent scripting skills
  • In-depth knowledge of R/Bioconductor and/or Python
  • Working experience with GNU/Linux operating system
  • Enthusiastic about statistical and bioinformatics data analysis
  • Strong communication skills and a team-oriented approach
  • Good understanding of biological research questions
  • Service-oriented and adaptable to the evolving field of bioinformatics
  • Advanced proficiency in English
